Actor Rainn Wilson, who famously played Dwight Schrute in “The Office,” fired back hard at Stephanie Ruhle after the MSNBC host tried to blame the Trump administration for Americans' lack of trust in the media.
Wilson, in a discussion on his podcast “Soul Boom,” wondered why journalistic integrity has taken such a massive hit, with over 40% of Americans having little to no trust in the mainstream media. (As you'll see below, it's actually higher than that.)
Ruhle quickly, if not predictably, pointed the finger at President Trump and those in his circle, saying there is "a concerted effort to destroy the media" because they are "the last line of defense of holding power accountable."
The anchor lamented that the media was the victim of a "perfect storm" that included viewers' anger over Trump's election victory, which caused them to tune out, and a push by Elon Musk and X to convince Americans to pivot to social media's "bastion of misinformation."
Calling X such a thing while knowing full well you work for a network that is an actual "bastion of misinformation" is undoubtedly an interesting tactic.
Wilson fought back against Ruhle's assertion, suggesting it didn't fly when the public watched four years of the media whistling through the graveyard while Joe Biden was President, but suddenly rediscovered their curiosity now that Trump is back.
“This is where I would push back: When I see this kind of insight and passion being directed at the current administration and the lack of this kind of insight and passion being directed at the previous administration," he countered.
"Where again, I’m not talking about you, I’m talking about left-leaning news media organizations — were kind of like, ‘La la la la, everything’s fine. Look, the economy is great, la la la, immigration’s not that much of a problem,’" he said, fingers in his ears. "And really being Cleopatra, queen of denial."
"Thank you. Boom," Wilson concluded after making the joke.

One point of contention here, Rainn - It doesn't get much further to the left regarding the news than Ruhle and MSNBC, so maybe let's not give them a pass.
Remarkably, Ruhle responds to Wilson's comments by suggesting the legacy media did call out the Biden administration for allowing illegal immigrants to flow into the country unfettered.
“The media regularly talked about the fact that Biden was not doing enough in his first two and a half years on immigration, even though in the last year and a half, you’re seeing the numbers go down," she argued.
Stop. Just stop. You won't find a minute of coverage on MSNBC today or in the past three months about President Trump securing the border to levels not seen in decades. But you're going to contend with a straight face, no less, that your network hammered Biden while he was in office for not securing the border?
Rainn Wilson isn’t exactly a hard-right conservative. But he does have moments of clarity, unlike the character he played on television.
In 2023, he took aim at an episode from the HBO series “The Last of Us," which had a character who was a pastor. The "pastor" ended up being a cannibal fueled by pedophilia.
Wilson indicated that he knew almost immediately that the character would be a bad guy. And that's quite a feat in a series focusing on the apocalypse, zombies, and a government crackdown on the people.
“I do think there is an anti-Christian bias in Hollywood. As soon as the David character in ‘The Last of Us’ started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain,” Wilson posted on X.
“Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?”
Now he's calling out accurate and verifiable bias in the media.
A recent Gallup poll shows that only 31 percent of Americans trust the media a great deal or a fair amount, while 69 percent either do not trust it very much or have no trust at all.
