Crockett's Trainwreck Announcement Underscores Why She's Not Ready for Prime Time

As we reported, Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) just announced her run for the Democratic Senate nomination in Texas.

Now, I'm not going to assume that she's going to tank big time. As we saw with the New York City mayoral race, there appears to be no low that Democrats won't vote for. But this is Texas.

Crockett first has to face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, and that in itself may be tough. Talarico has already been off to the races, demonizing Elon Musk and saying trillionaires should be taxed out of existence. Either choice isn't likely to play all that well in Texas.

As we also noted, her announcement video wasn't focused on the things she would do for Texas; it was focused on herself, with President Donald Trump's words calling her "low IQ."

So what in that video is going to convince people to vote for her in a state that went to Trump in 2024 by almost 14 points? She's taking the same tack as Kamala Harris, "Trump bad, vote for me." And how did that work out?

It got worse at her announcement event, with a rap performance by Cameron McCloud. It was bizarrely bad, including the line, "I can't wrap my head around someone who votes Republican," and then trying to drop an Epstein smear.

I'm sure insulting Republicans in a Republican state with a bad rap is going to go over well. Did he forget the words in the middle of that?

Crockett's demonstrating that she's just not serious when she does things like this. And, of course, reminding everyone that she tried to smear Republicans for receiving donations from "a Jeffrey Epstein" — just not the disgraced sex offender financier — simply showed her to have no credibility at all.

To top that off, Crockett then told CNN host Laura Coates that she didn't need to convince all Republicans/Trump supporters to flip.

"Our goal is to definitely talk to people. No, we don't, we don't need to. Our goal is to make sure that we can engage people that historically have not been talked to, because there's so many people that get ignored, specifically in the state of Texas. Listen, the state of Texas is 61% people of color. We have a lot of good folks that we can talk to," the lawmaker said.

Well, that's a tactic, appearing to blow off Trump voters in Texas. Maybe that explains why she doesn't care about insulting them. That should go over well, as she searches for the folks she thinks don't normally turn out to vote. Shades of Katie Porter, perhaps?

Then, too, saying she's going to be pitching to "people of color" — that they have a lot of "good folks" they can talk to — also is a tactic that appears to be cutting off other voters. That's not exactly the way to start a campaign, not if you hope to win.

Yes, she does need to convince at least some of the Trump voters to have any chance at all, and if she doesn't think so, she's deluding herself.
