Indiana's legislature has been considering whether it will do redistricting that might help increase more Republican seats.
As we reported, some of the Republicans were already throwing blocks into the idea. President Donald Trump had reportedly been in contact with Hoosier lawmakers to tell them how important this was for holding onto the House, and Republican Gov. Mike Braun was encouraging it as well.
This comes after officials with the Indiana State Senate announced earlier this month that they would reconvene next month to make a “final decision” on redistricting. According to previous reports, Indiana Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray, a Republican from Martinsville, said the Indiana State Senate would reconvene on Dec. 8 as part of the regular 2026 session.

Now, there may be one more block in the effort.
Republican Indiana state Senator Michael Bohacek announced he would not be voting in favor of redistricting. But his reason for doing so is wild. He said he isn't going to vote for it because Trump used the term "retarded" in reference to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz during a Thanksgiving post about immigration. He said it disturbed him because his daughter has Down Syndrome.

“I will be voting NO on redistricting, perhaps he can use the next 10 months to convince voters that his policies and behavior deserve a congressional majority.”
This is just wrong; that isn't how you should be deciding bills. You should be deciding bills based on whether the decision on the bill is best for your district (in this case, Michiana Shores) and Americans, not based on whether you don't like a word that Trump has used. So, because Bohacek's personally offended by something Trump said, what he's doing could lead to the Democrats taking back the House.
It isn't just about whether Trump deserves a congressional majority; it's what's in the best interests of the American people, which isn't helping the Democratic Party get back the House.
If the Democrats get back in, any positive conservative policies will fail. All we will have are investigations and a third impeachment effort.
By the way, it should also be noted that Trump has directed millions toward support for more Down Syndrome research in the past. He's also issued statements in support, including one talking about "commitment to standing against those who seek to discriminate, devalue, and demean the sanctity of their lives" of people with Down Syndrome. Does Bohacek know that?
Bohacek got roasted by many Republicans on X for this type of reasoning.
So an elected Republican is going to possibly hand the House to the Democrats because the Republican president used a word he didn’t like.

In case you were wondering why Republicans lose. https://t.co/1HAePib2NK
Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to huddle via conference call with Indiana House Republicans this weekend ahead of their upcoming state House session to redraw congressional maps, according to two people familiar with the planning and an invitation viewed by POLITICO.
So maybe Johnson will have some positive influence on the situation and help bring it home.
