Labor leaders who have spent months lobbying unsuccessfully for special protections under the Affordable Care Act warned this week that the White House’s continued refusal to help is dampening union support for Democratic candidates in this year’s midterm elections.

Leaders of two major unions, including the first to endorse Obama in 2008, said they have been betrayed by an administration that wooed their support for the 2009 legislation with promises to later address the peculiar needs of union-negotiated insurance plans that cover millions of workers.

No, seriously. If we do nothing, then union leadership will keep on with getting very, very upset at being lied to – and thus not do anything to help the Democrats at the polls in about nine months. But if we mock them too heavily, that might get the union bosses motivated to rev things up, out of sheer spite. Put another way, it’s a delicate situation: I urge private snickering.

PS: Remember, the average member of a private sector labor union is much more likely to be a Republican than his/her union’s contribution history might suggest; and in far too many locales you have no choice except to belong to the union*. Which is another way of saying that many of these people have been as infuriated and sick of Obamacare as you have been, and are just as frustrated at their past inability to do anything about it. Human beings are not potatoes**: so save that kind of thinking for the Democrats.

*That it is typically an involuntary kind of situation can be seen by even a casual look at what happens to union membership when it’s no longer compulsory.
