Gavin Gives Very Newsom-Like Response When Asked How He Believes Biden Will Perform During Debate

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is in Atlanta for the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle.

A reporter asked Newsom about his thoughts on the debate:

Tonight goes without saying, people want to see conviction, they want to see strength, they want to see clarity of message. They want to see contrast; they want their candidates to lift up the issues, and at the end of the day, that's what debates are all about. And then there is moments, and the Biden campaign is prepared for those.

For the past three-and-a-half years, Biden has shown weakness on the world stage and domestically. Under Trump's "peace through strength" foreign policy, there were no new wars. The American people should be reminded of that during the debate.

As for "clarity of message," has Newsom not been paying attention since Biden took office? Unfortuantely, there hasn't been much clarity when Biden speaks about anything, much less during a debate.

Newsom, on there being no audience at the debate, said he believes Biden has already won:

Well, I have a little bias because I did a debate here in Georgia without an audience, and I just think it's better for the American people because now you're not playing the audience; you're not just playing the crowd in room. You gotta create a framework and engage, that speaks to a larger audience, so I think that's a very healthy thing. I think it's a very good thing for the Biden campaign ... From my perspective, in many ways Biden's already won this debate. First of all, it's on his calendar, it's on his timeline, he asserted himself ... I've been really impressed and inspired by Biden's strategy so far.

Biden is a good debater, he's done a lot of debates for many decades, so one should not underestimate him.

Just a reminder of how that debate went for Newsom in Georgia against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL):

Newsom loves to talk, especially about other states and GOP politicians; it's what he does best. But he never acts and doesn't accomplish anything meaningful for his own state, so it makes sense why the Biden campaign thought it would be a good idea to have Newsom in the spin room—it's what he does best.
