Did Star Wars star Billy Dee Williams just come out as ‘gender fluid’?

The legendary actor gave an interview to Esquire magazine recently in which he got a little…raw.

Before her death, Carrie Fisher admitted that she had a brief sexual affair with Harrison Ford on the set of Star Wars. When asked ab0ut his thoughts on the matter, Williams said he couldn’t care less who was doing what to whom.

On set, he befriended costars Carrie Fisher (who he says had a brilliant mind) and Harrison Ford (whom he still considers a dear friend), and he avoided workplace gossip. “As far as I’m concerned, I mean, I don’t care what people are—if they’re fucking each other and they’re sucking each other, whatever they’re doing, that’s fine with me. I don’t care,” he says of Fisher and Ford’s romance, as described in her memoir.

Ok. Fair enough. But then Williams drifted off into bizarre territory. The 82-year-old actor seemed to indicate he embraces gender fluidity.

In a simple tan button-up, with his hair slicked back, Williams continues his analysis of cool: “And you see I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine. I’m a very soft person. I’m not afraid to show that side of myself.”

The progressive media has framed this story as Williams “coming out” as gender fluid. However, looking at his statement it’s not totally clear that’s what he’s done. It sounds like the same thing that Joe Biden is experiencing right now – an old man trying hard to keep pace with an entirely new social language.

I don’t really believe Williams even understands the concept of ‘gender fluidity’. Most sane people don’t. I believe he was expressing a popular sentiment among actors, which is that you can’t be boxed in by societal expectations about how any one person should behave. It’s a creative perspective more than a sexual one.

However, I have no doubt that Williams (like most celebrities) is a glutton for attention. At his age there is no real reason to do anything other than let this story bubble and enjoy the fame bump.
