WTH: Kids' Baseball Coach Being Hailed As Hero After Shots Rang Out During Pregame Prayer

A Texas children's baseball coach is being hailed as a hero after shots rang out from a nearby field during a pregame prayer, and he took a bullet that could've wounded or killed at least one of the children present.

In a press release from the Waller County Sheriff's office, it said that deputies had responded to reports of gunfire near the Ameripark youth baseball field in Katy, Texas, on September 21.

It read:

The investigation revealed that three suspects discharged firearms from a nearby pasture, in the direction of the field, while a youth baseball event was taking place. During the gunfire, one adult male was struck in the upper arm. He was transported to Memorial Herman Hospital in downtown Houston for treatment and was later released.

Through investigative efforts, the three suspects involved have been identified. Charges of Deadly Conduct and other related offenses are being pursued.

According to KHOU 11, those three suspects are "Mahmood Abdelsalam Rababah, 23, Ahmad Mawed, 21, and Mustafa Mohammad Matalgah, 27," with a judge setting each of their bonds at $100,000.

The outlet also noted that the person who was struck in the shoulder by one of the bullets was a children's baseball coach.

Houston Warriors founder Andy Baize told the local news that the coach had been saying a pregame prayer with their team when he was struck.

"He literally took the bullet for a child that was to his left, and so thankfully we avoided a major disaster. Still very, very emotional over it," Baize said.

"When he was struck by the bullet, his first reaction was to get down to the ground, cover his kids, and get them to a safe space," he added.

The report went on:

The gunfire sent players, coaches, and parents running for cover, but no one else was injured.

Coaches told KHOU 11 News they could hear gunfire throughout the weekend at the complex, and gunshots could be heard during an online stream.

Witnesses also told the outlet that after the coach was hit, someone used a belt as a tourniquet until first responders arrived. He was taken to the hospital, later released, and is now recovering with non-life-threatening injuries.

I can't be one-hundred percent sure, but it definitely does appear that a miracle happened down in Texas. Because if that coach had not been doing a prayer with his kids at that moment, it is likely that one of the kids, if not more, could've been wounded or worse, killed.

There are quite a few comments on social media about what happened on the baseball field, with a majority asking what the heck those three men were doing "discharging firearms" at the complex near the area where kids were playing baseball.

"When I go shooting, I make sure I am miles away from any town or buildings, and it's always shooting away from town towards a hillside," one person wrote. "This is basic common sense. Even if you are on your own private property, this is basic common sense."

Another wrote, "This is a crazy story! It almost seems like it's being [addressed] nonchalantly, like oh no big deal, just hitting a baseball field full of Americans from 600 to 700 yards away without being on a practice range…nothing to see here. WTH?!!"

At the time of this publication, there has been no other information from the Waller County Sheriff's Office about the shooting or if something more sinister was going on there. This story is developing, and you can guarantee RedState will report if more comes out.
