Olympic Gold medalist Mary Lou Retton was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence on May 17 near her home in West Virginia. It comes two years after she survived a major health scare.
According to records posted online by the West Virginia Magistrate Court system, the 57-year-old gymnastics icon was arrested for "driving under influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs.” Retton faces one misdemeanor count of DUI following the arrest.

Fairmont police said Retton was pulled over following reports about a person driving a Porsche erratically, the Associated Press reported.
According to the criminal complaint, Retton smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words, and she failed a field sobriety test. Officers also reported observing a container of wine in the passenger seat.
Retton, 57, refused a roadside breath test and a blood test. She was released from custody after paying a $1,500 personal recognizance bond.
Two years ago, the Olympic gold medalist survived a major health battle with a "rare form of pneumonia,” the New York Post reported.
In October 2023, Rhetton's daughter McKenna Kelley announced that her famous mom was in the hospital, struggling to breathe.
Kelley's post on crowdfunding site SpotFund read at the time:
My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life. She is not able to breathe on her own. She's been in the ICU for over a week now. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details.
However, I will disclose that she [is] not insured. We ask that if you could help in any way, that 1) you PRAY! and 2) if you could help us with finances for the hospital bill. ANYTHING, absolutely anything, would be so helpful for my family and my mom. Thank y'all so very much!"
Retton's daughter followed it up with a post on Instagram that her mom was still in the ICU and asked again for help to cover the hospital bills.
"My sisters Kyla, Shyla, Emma and I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support for our mom," Kelley wrote on Instagram, in a post that's since been deleted.
"Mom is in the ICU and continues to fight," she added. "She is getting incredible medical care! Thank you to all the doctors and nurses."
The SpotFund fundraiser collected a total of nearly $460,00 in donations, passing its original $50,000 goal.
A year later, the legendary gymnast appeared on the "Today" show and opened up about her massive health scare.
"This is serious, and this is life, and I'm so grateful to be here," Retton said on NBC in 2024. "I am blessed to be here because there was a time when they were about to put me on life support."
In 1984, Retton became a household name when she made history at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics:
Recording perfect 10s on the floor and vault, she pipped her rival to the title by 0.05 points, becoming the first American in history to win an Olympic individual all-round gold. Not satisfied with this historic triumph, she went on to secure silver in the vault, bronze in the uneven bars and the floor, and another silver in the team event. Having won more medals than any other participant at the 1984 Games, she was named Sportswoman of the Year and Amateur Athlete of the Year by the American press.
