Well that didn’t last long.
Back in February, Clueless actress Stacey Dash announced that she was running for Congress in California’s 44th district.
The district includes the cities of Compton, Carson, San Pedro and Wilmington. Democratic Rep. Nannette Barragan currently holds the seat. The district hasn’t elected a Republican since Rep. Ken Calvert in 2010.
This afternoon Dash tweeted a statement indicating that she is withdrawing her candidacy.
I have released this statement on my campaign. It’s not an easy one. pic.twitter.com/HvKuUad48F

I’m not a fan of using celebrity as a springboard into politics, Ronald Reagan being the exception that proves the rule. (There are no Reagans anymore, let alone in Hollywood.) I was skeptical about whether Dash would be able to go the distance.
She is somewhat of a lightning rod in the black community. Having been a celebrity sex symbol prior to coming out as a conservative, she was labeled a turncoat by many. This race would have gotten ugly in a lot of ways. And while Dash’s courage in expressing unpopular views is to be commended, I don’t think she has the kind of personality that could have taken all that abuse and still manage to stay on message.
This news probably comes as no surprise to many.
