Just days before the US government will officially end the COVID-19 public health emergency (but on the day the WHO officially declared its end), Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky is leaving her position.
Joe Biden praised Walensky in a statement acknowledging her departure:
“Dr. Walensky has saved lives with her steadfast and unwavering focus on the health of every American. As Director of the CDC, she led a complex organization on the frontlines of a once-in-a-generation pandemic with honesty and integrity. She marshalled our finest scientists and public health experts to turn the tide on the urgent crises we’ve faced.
“Dr. Walensky leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans. We have all benefited from her service and dedication to public health, and I wish her the best in her next chapter.”
Many Americans heartily disagree with Biden’s assessment of Walensky’s performance, and have a laundry list of reasons why. For example, her department admitted to “abject failure” in their COVID guidance; like her contemporaries Anthony Fauci and Barbara Ferrer, she didn’t follow the same rules all of us did; she relied on a shoddy study co-authored by Barbara Ferrer’s non-MD daughter to recommend mask mandates in schools; her husband received $5 million in HHS grants for his start-up and wasn’t held to the same standards as other recipients; and let’s not forget her disgusting statements on the Tuskegee Experiment.
