As my colleague Nick Arama covered, it’s expected that Joe Biden will appear on Friday’s Morning Joe to talk about the allegation that he sexually assaulted a former staffer, Tara Reade. Given that in every single appearance Biden’s made recently he’s invented new ways to toss a word salad, it’s safe to say that Mika and Joe will attempt to frame the interview in such a way that Biden only has to grunt or say yes or no.
We all know that Biden’s campaign chose Morning Joe as the venue for his inevitable “grilling” because it’s a safe and friendly forum. Fairness isn’t expected, but in light of Mika Brzezinski’s previous comments about Biden and her unwavering defense of creepy progressive predators, this appearance might as well be a Biden campaign event.
For example, in August 2019, after former Nevada Assemblywoman Lucy Flores and Amy Lappos, a former congressional aide, accused Biden of inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment, Brzezinski ranted on air:
“I think the next time I see Joe Biden, if he doesn’t hug me and give me a kiss and hold my hand while we’re talking to you, that’s the new Joe Biden, and that’s not the Joe Biden I knew,” she told co-host Joe Scarborough on their show Tuesday on MSNBC. “He’s a nice guy. He’s not a predator, and this is ridiculous. Let me just say it: This is ridiculous. The conversation has gotten out of control.”
“You’re eating your young. You’re eating those who can beat Trump. You’re killing the very people who have been pushing women ahead, who have been fighting for equal pay, who have been doing everything they can to respect women in their lives.”
When it came to Tom Brokaw, Brzezinski was one of more than 60 women who put her name to an open letter supporting him while also privately telling Brokaw’s accuser, Linda Vester, that she believed her. When Vester confronted Brzezinski and asked why she’d publicly defended Brokaw, Brzezinski’s excuse was that “Tom Brokaw is an old man and he probably wouldn’t survive” the allegation.
The open letter, published at Deadline, said in part:
We are current and former colleagues of Tom’s, who have worked with him over a period spanning four decades. We are producers, correspondents, anchors, directors, executives, researchers, personal assistants, editors and technical staff.
Tom has treated each of us with fairness and respect. He has given each of us opportunities for advancement and championed our successes throughout our careers….We know him to be a man of tremendous decency and integrity.”
And then there’s Tingles himself, Chris Matthews. Of her fellow MSNBC talking head, Brzezinski said:
“As a woman I want to say this: I loved working with Chris Matthews. I really enjoyed being his colleague. I understand the important changes around this so-called cancel culture – they’re important, they’re hard, they’re painful and in many cases they are necessary. I do wonder at this point though, as we move forward and we look at this and what happened here, if there might be a better way for all of us in the future where we work through this and get to a better place. But for now I’ll just say I’ll miss him every night at 7 pm, but I remain his friend.”
In 2019 Brzezinski caused a commotion within MSNBC with her repeated attempts to “rehab” the career of Mark Halperin, who had been a regular panelist on Morning Joe. After efforts by Brzenzinski and her hubby to launch an online-only program analyzing the 2018 midterms, with Halperin as a partner, were ix-nayed by MSNBC brass, Brzezinski “devoted a Morning Joe segment to Halperin’s rehab, playing and positively commenting on an audio clip of his appearance on Smerconish’s SiriusXM program, in which Halperin claimed he had engaged in ‘hundreds’ of discussions with women on the subject of workplace sexual harassment and had come to a new understanding of how his misconduct had ‘hurt’ people.”
There is no way a hard-hitting interview is going to take place, even if Joe Biden were mentally capable of engaging in one. Mika Brzezinski would never ask him a question that might lead to any type of honest discussion of the issue, and MSNBC should be sure its viewers know the bias of its host.
