Mike Johnson Teases a Long-Overdue Fight Over Entitlement Spending

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) made a Monday radio appearance on The Moon Griffon Show and teased how the House of Representatives planned to address the $39 trillion in federal debt.

Johnson told Griffon:

"And then, we're going to lead up to what we have to do to address the largest spending item. The reason we're in trouble is because over 74 percent of federal spending is on autopilot. Mandatory spending. That's your entitlement programs like, Medicare, Medicaid, and then things like Social Security. They have to be adjusted and fixed. We have a plan to do that, uh, next year, and it's critical because we're at 40 trillion, plus."

LISTEN:

The weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth from the Democrats that has transpired with DOGE, then with the One Big Beautiful Law (OBBL), and now the Task Force on Fraud is only going to increase when Johnson makes this move. How does the Speaker plan to get these changes through committee, let alone the House floor?

Dems Continue to Welcome Socialist Candidates Out From Under Their Rock - This Time in Wisconsin

Of course, as soon as this interview hit the waves and that soundbite was distributed, Democrat National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin immediately grabbed it to post on X, raising the alarm that "cuts" to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid were imminent. Martin also got in the requisite dunk on the OBBL's kicking illegal aliens off Medicaid, which he framed as the "largest healthcare cut in history."

Right...

With five months to the midterms and prospects for Democrats increasingly looking grim, Martin is setting a narrative that he hopes changes the trajectory. Both parties know that affordability, or the lack thereof, is still top of mind for many Americans. Is Johnson giving the Democrats the perfect rhetorical shiv to plunge in and twist?

Johnson immediately pushed back, accusing Democrats of fearmongering (they are) and laid out the progress Congress has made to claw back monies from government fraud, waste, and abuse that was exposed through DOGE and the Fraud Task Force.

Once again, Democrats and the media are fearmongering.

Everyone knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is rampant waste, fraud, and abuse throughout government programs. Just today, the @GOPoversight released a report that Tim Walz’s failures in Minnesota cost the taxpayer potentially $9 billion in Medicaid-related funds and roughly $300 million in federal child nutrition funds.

During this Congress, the House has already passed substantive legislation to clean up this waste, fraud, and abuse, and Democrats have voted against nearly every piece of legislation we’ve passed. We will continue to do so in this Congress and in future Congresses so that these important programs can be preserved for the American citizens that need them.

Democrats love to say that “everybody is against fraud,” and they are right — this is a 90/10 issue. Republicans are the ones with the courage to actually do anything about it.

A recommendation to the Speaker: Move past the language of "adjust and fix" and start the campaign on exactly how you plan to implement those fixes and adjustments, then tie that into how this will make life more affordable for everyone. Otherwise, the Democrats will continue to leverage this language to their benefit.

Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
