SAVE Act Clears Last Procedural Hurdle, Heads to the House Floor for Vote

Wednesday afternoon, the SAVE Act cleared a final procedural hurdle and is now on its way to the House floor for the full vote

The SAVE America Act would require documentation that shows proof of citizenship, like a passport or a birth certificate, to register to vote in federal elections. It would also implement photo ID requirements for voting itself, another GOP priority. The bill is the latest iteration of a measure House Republicans have sought to pass through both chambers for several years.

Republicans have lauded the measure as a reasonable way to prevent noncitizens from casting ballots, though instances of noncitizens voting are exceedingly rare.

"Common-sense legislation to just ensure that American citizens decide American elections — it really is that simple," House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said Tuesday.

Democrat and Republican House members voted on House Resolution 157 (H Res. 157), which moved forward a passel of bills, including the SAVE America Act.

H Res. 157 passed on a party line vote, 215-214, with Rep. Thomas Massie (KY-04) being the one Republican "NO" vote. However, Massie's NO vote was on a particular rule embedded in the resolution, not to the SAVE Act itself. Massie took to X to explain that he will be a "YES" vote when the SAVE Act comes to the floor for its final vote.

The SAVE Act has been the subject of debate and angst, particularly among Democrats who are once again claiming voter suppression, "Jim Crow 2.0," and that "BIPOC Poors" (Black Indigenous People of Color) will be disenfranchised if they are forced to present an I.D. to prove they are U.S. citizens and eligible to vote in federal elections. As RedState has reported, illegal immigrants voting in elections is a feature rather than a bug, and the votes usually go one way: Democrat.

Republican Rep. Tim Burchett (TN-02), as well as the Democrats, know full well that this racist claim that Blacks and Hispanics are too stupid to obtain I.D. no longer flies.

So now they are crying that millions of women will be subjected to a "minefield" of red tape and voter suppression if this bill gets passed. Here is House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (MA-05).

Rep. Katherine Clark slams SAVE Act for threatening women's voting rights

"They're trying to say this is a voter ID bill. That's not what's happening here...Now you're saying to those women, because they got married and changed their names, that they have to go down to a clerk and prove they're citizens."

This is the usual smoke and mirrors used by Democrats to avoid actual debate or common sense. Responsible citizens have their vital records on hand, and can produce them when necessary. You can do very little in this country without having them. If a person cares enough about their vote and that it will be counted, then they'll take the necessary steps to ensure they are properly registered to vote. The accusation by Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) that Democrats simply want to make it easier to cheat in elections is proving true, because blocking any requirement to prove citizenship in federal elections allows for this to happen time and again.

The consensus among Americans is pretty clear: this has become an 80-20 issue, and Democrats are on the wrong side of the equation.

We look forward to passing this bill and learning which Members of Congress want secure elections — and which do not. It’s a matter of common sense.

The House will reconvene Wednesday evening to vote on a group of bills and resolutions, which include the SAVE Act.
