The Nationwide 'Hands Off' Marches Pretend at 'Peaceful Protests,' but Are Only a Deceptive Smokescreen

As RedState reported in February, just weeks after the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president, there were planned nationwide protests at 50 state capitals to "reject Project 2025," or something.

Many have wondered why the surge of protests against President Donald Trump and his administration has been scattered and, compared to the usual vitriol, a tad muted. My suspicion is that thanks to Kamala Harris' campaign excesses and the lawfare, the coffers and foot soldiers were depleted. Apparently, someone <*cough... George Soros...cough*> injected an infusion of cash to fund astroturf protests on Wednesday across the 50 United States capitals.

Seems like Soros discovered some fresh funding, because the 50501 Movement (as they are calling themselves) has joined forces with Indivisible, which received $7.6 million in March from George Soros' Open Society Foundation to mount the violent Tesla protests against Elon Musk, and were the main organization behind the Saturday, April 5 "Hands Off Our Rights & Jobs" protests that were also nationwide.

Indivisible founder Ezra Levin told Jen Rubin on her podcast "The Contrarian" that they wanted one big day following the Wisconsin Supreme Court special election to really make their voices heard. Levin felt that with Trump's "Liberation Day" and the stock market's response to his tariff policies, they were striking "while the iron is hot."

Days before April 5, Indivisible's North Alabama chapter focused on de-escalation and "peaceful protests," rallying the troops on their Facebook page:

With over a quarter of a million sign ups, we are taking action across the world this Saturday to protest Trump and his Tech Bro in Chief. It was only a week ago he signed an executive order on elections, effectively making it harder to vote for all Americans. Join us on April 5th and help Remove the corrupt politicians, Reverse the damage, and Restore our democracy.

Alabama had 10 protests scheduled across the state from South to North. I attended the Northern Alabama one in downtown Huntsville at Spring Park. I live closer to Huntsville than Birmingham, and if things were to go sideways there was a better opportunity for a quick escape. I don't even like driving through Birmingham, let alone going there to attend a protest.

In terms of crowd size, let's say for a city which has close to 300,000 citizens and is the largest and fastest growing one in the state, the numbers were underwhelming. In this Facebook post (which appears to have been deleted), Indivisible North Alabama estimated around 2,000.

Look at the video footage my husband took: not even close.

The majority of the protest involved the moderators leading the participants in chanting and marching around the area of the park. They did this three times. In between those marches were speakers, most of them local union activists and supporters of the pet leftist causes of Ukraine funding, transgender rights, and voting rights. The Alabama legislature has been fighting hard against the Drag Queen and age-inappropriate library book encroachment, but speaker and transgender activist Allison Montgomery claimed:

The people who are running this country into the ground have been working from the same playbook for decades, a playbook based on Christian nationalism, a fundamental distortion of the values of a healthy country. And you know, I'm a Christian. I'm not trying to drag them for being Christian. I'm going to say they're bad at leading because they suck at being part of a community. They just can't get along with folks who aren't exactly like them.

Recent evidence would reflect the contrary, but hey, Allison, you go— Ummm...

The biggest impression was that they tried their best to look grassroots, but screen-printed signs, Palestinian flags, and fancy displays belied that fact.

While the below sign's message was probably grassroots, and definitely not ubiquitously displayed, it's a reflection of the disconnect on the Left. Basically, this protestor is maligning the American people who voted for Trump and applaud the work of DOGE and Elon Musk. Her message: "If America Hasn't Broken Your Heart You Don't Love Her Enough," gives the impression that what is occurring under the Trump administration is heartbreaking, and if you aren't feeling remorse, then obviously there is something wrong with you.

So much for understanding the other side, and "unity."

As many commentators are pointing out, despite their claims of "peacefully protesting," the language and signage are still riddled with violence.

Attorney and pundit Jonathan Turley discussed the appearance of a guillotine at the D.C. "Hands Off" protest and how the Left was outraged when the Right supposedly used this imagery. Now that it's on their side, it's all good.

One of the most cited facts about January 6th was a mock gallows brought by some protesters who named Vice President Michael Pence as a candidate for the noose. The media continued to reference and show the gallows in its coverage. It has shown less interest in the appearance of a guillotine at prior pro-Palestine protests, at the Trump inauguration, and in the protests on Saturday against Donald Trump.

The appearance of the noose on January 6th was roundly condemned, including on this blog, at the time, but then became a talking point on the left to show that this was a violent attempt to overthrow the government. Harvard Professor Lawrence Tribe has even claimed that Trump should have been charged with the attempted murder of Pence.

The media seems less alarmed by such images on the left. At the Hands Off! protest organized by Indivisible, some apparently felt it was better to focus on heads off and the divisibility of their political opponents.

The reappearance of the device associated with “The Terror” of the French Revolution was a crude handicraft this weekend and carried by just a couple of protesters. It was a small, rather pathetic version in comparison to the earlier replicas. It was only meant to convey the anger of these particular protesters about what should happen to the likes of Musk and Trump.

The point is not that everyone in this protest, or even this couple, was encouraging violence. After all, these were just two unhinged protesters among thousands. Rather, this is how we treated rage rhetoric that is the point, which I discuss in my book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage.”

Rage is a curious thing. If you agree with the underlying grievance it is righteous, if you disagree, it is dangerous.

In the speech by "Jeff" (as he was identified), the leader of the Northern Alabama 50501 Movement, he did not "mince words" concerning their ultimate violent intent.

Remove. We are here to remove this administration. We are not satisfied with the status quo and we are definitely not happy with the direction that it is going.

Overturning elections is what they accused Trump of trying to do in 2020, and the Left has run the J6 and the violent overthrow of government narrative into the ground. So, how is this coded language any different?

Jeff continued:

Reverse. We are here to reverse. The illegal executive orders and the infringements upon our rights. Systems that have kept us down for decades, that have held workers and minorities under the boot. We are here to change them.

What rights, exactly, are being infringed upon by this administration? In the few months of protests, this still has not been articulated clearly. While they have appeared to move from raging and destroying private property and businesses, they still have not presented a plan on how they would do things differently. This is why they lost in the first place. Jeff concluded, "We are here to remove the billionaires from power. We are to reverse the flow of wealth."

Ahhh, there's that Marxist agenda in a nutshell. In fact, Indivisible's co-partner Leah Levin compared the Indivisible initiatives to the "Thousand Flowers Movement." Her ignorance of history is reflected in the fact that she couldn't even get the name right. The proper name of that Mao Zedong initiative is the "Hundred Flowers Movement," and you know what the end result was? The Communist Chinese using this "openness" to punish their enemies.

So, make no mistake: this pretense at peacefully protesting is just that. Like Occupy and their so-called resistance movements since, they plan to expand and change tactics, and those will be more attacks and fomenting of violence. Because when your movement has no moral center, that is all you have.
