What Lies Beneath: Democrats' Motive in Pursuing Politically-Charged Indictments Against Trump for 2024

Ever since Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted former President Donald Trump over the Stormy Daniels matter, it was clear what the Democrats’ strategy was. The plan was to inundate the Orange Man What Is Bad™ with a series of legal battles to influence the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.

Not too long after, the Justice Department lodged an indictment against the former president over his alleged mishandling of classified documents. Most recently, Trump received a “target letter” related to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol building. It is also expected that Fulton County, Georgia, will also be indicting the former president.

Needless to say, the left’s strategy is in full swing. But the question is: What is their ultimate objective in tying Trump up with legal issues – especially if most can see that they are motivated purely by political considerations?

So far, I have seen two schools of thought on this. Is it a calculated move to ensure Trump doesn’t secure the GOP nomination, or is it an effort to boost his chances in the primaries so that President Joe Biden will face him in the general election? Let’s explore both intriguing speculations.

The first theory suggests that Democrats might be leveraging politically-motivated prosecutions in an attempt to derail Trump’s aspirations for the Republican nomination. By hoping for a conviction that would disqualify him in the eyes of primary voters, they might be aiming to steer the GOP towards a different candidate, potentially someone like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has been in second place since primary season began. This strategic move could be seen as an attempt to improve Joe Biden’s chances of securing re-election because Democrats view Trump as the most challenging candidate to beat.

On the other hand, some analysts suggest that a counterintuitive strategy is at play. It’s plausible that Democrats see the politically-motivated indictments as a means to boost Trump’s popularity among the conservative base during the Republican primaries. Each indictment, regardless of its legitimacy, tends to dominate media attention and has rallied Republicans behind Trump, painting him as a victim of selective prosecution. Democrats might believe that the more they try to undermine Trump, the stronger his position becomes within his party, ultimately cementing his status as the GOP nominee.

Could it be that Democrats are secretly hoping for a Trump comeback in the general election? The reasoning behind this theory might lie in the belief that Trump’s divisive persona and controversial policies could alienate moderate and swing voters, making it easier for Biden to secure another victory. From their perspective, facing Trump might be the optimal scenario, as it offers a clearer contrast between Biden’s vision and Trump’s tenure, allowing the Democratic base to mobilize more effectively.

Conservative commentator Rich Lowry seems to fall into this category:

There’s being fortunate in your enemies, and then there’s having enemies who are helping you take the first step in your political comeback.

Donald Trump and his adversaries want profoundly different things in the long run — Trump wants to be back in the White House; Democrats want him in an orange jumpsuit.

Yet in the shorter term, they both are seeking the same thing — Trump as the Republican nominee, either so he can sweep to victory (Trump’s view) or be beaten again and pay the price for his crimes (the Democrats’ view).

The serial indictments of Trump, even if it’s not their primary purpose, advance this mutual interest.

With every indictment, Trump dominates media attention and rallies Republicans to his side based on charges of selective prosecution.

As the legal battles unfold, it is crucial to remember that the political landscape is unpredictable, and each move is a calculated risk for both sides. The ultimate outcome of these indictments remains uncertain, and the consequences they will have on the 2024 election are still anyone’s guess.

Moreover, some skeptics argue that focusing on politically-motivated prosecutions distracts from the true purpose of the justice system, which is to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law. While politics and law often intersect, it’s essential to avoid the perception that justice is being weaponized for partisan gain.

In a nutshell, the relationship between Trump’s indictments and the 2024 election is undeniably complex and rife with speculation. Democrats’ motives may be multifaceted, aiming to either hinder Trump’s nomination or strategically boost his candidacy for their perceived advantage. As the legal proceedings unfold, the political world watches with bated breath, eager to see how this high-stakes game of strategic maneuvers will unfold and ultimately impact the future of American politics.
