The left can dish it out, but it appears they can’t take it.
Elon Musk has once again enraged folks on the authoritarian left by giving them a small taste of their own medicine. He declared that those using the terms “cis” or “cisgender” in a derogatory manner would be suspended or face other punishment. At this point, it has become far too difficult to figure out who triggers the left more: Elon Musk or former President Donald Trump.
For those who are not versed in the realm of wokeism, “cisgender” refers to individuals whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth.
It is not yet known whether only cisgenders can call each other that word as a term of endearment or if it is banned completely on the platform. Musk has also not explained whether it is only when the term is used with the hard “R” rather than just saying “cisgenda.” I suppose those details can be worked out later.
The situation started when commentator James Esses complained on Twitter about people calling him “cissy” or “cis” after he stated that he did not like being referred to by those labels and speculated as to what would happen “if the roles were reversed.”
Yesterday, after posting a Tweet saying that I reject the word ‘cis’ and don’t wish to be called it, I receive a slew of messages from trans activists calling me “cissy” and telling me that I am ‘cis’ “whether or not I like it”.
Just imagine if the roles were reversed.

Musk responded, affirming that “[r]epeated, targeted harassment against any account will cause the harassing accounts to receive, at minimum, temporary suspensions.” He also noted that “cis” and “cisgender” “are considered slurs on this platform.”

It didn’t take long for whiny-assed leftists to wail about the development. Vanity Fair published an op-ed in which the author complained about Musk allowing The Daily Wire’s “What Is a Woman” to play on the platform because it is supposedly anti-transgender. “As for Musk’s leadership, he has a history of implementing sudden and sweeping changes to Twitter’s content guidelines—often to solve personal grievances,” he bloviated.
Not to be outdone, USA Today also joined in on the whining. “Musk’s mucking about with ‘cisgender’ is a painfully transparent dig at the transgender community – if you treat ‘cisgender’ as negative, you’re implying the word ‘transgender’ or other words that express gender identity are also bad,” the author wrote, with tears probably streaming dramatically down his face.
Musk’s declaration follows Twitter’s policy changes, including the rollback of a ban on targeted misgendering or deadnaming of transgender individuals.
The brilliance of this move has drawn attention to the ongoing debate surrounding online censorship, particularly concerning the actions of the so-called “hard left” in trying to suppress opposing viewpoints by labeling them as “hateful.” Musk’s decision to enforce the “cis” rule, if implemented, would offer a taste of their own medicine to those who advocate for censorship and reveal the inherent absurdity of the environment created by these practices. After all, what’s good for the unwoke goose is good for the woke gander, isn’t it?
Over the past few years, the internet has become a battleground for ideological conflicts, with both the left and the right engaging in heated debates. However, the hard left has been particularly aggressive in their attempts to silence dissenting voices through censorship and cancel culture. If you say the wrong word or express the wrong opinion, they appeal to the Woke Digital Sanhedrin to enforce their laws on the rest of us. They often resort to accusations of hate speech, intolerance, or bigotry to justify their demands for bans, suspensions, and cancelations on social media platforms. Until Musk took over, this was a winning strategy for authoritarian progressives.
But now, it’s a different story.
Elon Musk, known for his unfiltered and sometimes controversial Twitter presence, decided to challenge this prevailing narrative by redefining the rules of engagement. By stating that “cis” and “cisgender” are slurs and may lead to suspensions, Musk has effectively turned the tables on those who have weaponized language and promoted censorship as a means to enforce ideological conformity. This move, if implemented, would demonstrate the consequences of targeting individuals simply for their political views.
To put it simply, I love it.
Musk’s decision sheds light on the overall absurdity of the online environment that has been shaped by the hard left. By constantly pushing for bans and suspensions based on subjective interpretations of what constitutes hate speech, they have created an atmosphere where differing opinions are often stifled rather than engaged with in constructive dialogue. Musk’s proposed enforcement of the “cis” rule would expose the hypocrisy and disproportionate reactions that have come to define this environment.
While Musk’s statement has ignited a fierce debate, it ultimately calls for a more balanced approach to online discourse. Instead of reflexively labeling opposing viewpoints as hateful or attempting to silence them, fostering an environment that encourages open dialogue and respectful debate would be a more constructive way to address ideological differences. But even if this doesn’t cause the left to rethink their authoritarianism, at least it will give us some laughs.
