This should be a much bigger story.
According to a former CIA director, the Intelligence Community used its platform to influence the outcome of the 2020 election. This latest development demonstrates even further how elements in the federal government are working to push a political agenda.
The New York Post reported that in a private sworn testimony in front of the House Judiciary Committee, former acting CIA director Mike Morell admitted to organizing 50 colleagues to sign a letter in October 2020 falsely claiming that damning emails from Hunter Biden’s laptop, which were published by the news outlet, were Russian disinformation. Morell stated that Antony Blinken, now Secretary of State, who was a senior campaign official for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, reached out to him “on or before” October 17, 2020, triggering his intent to write the statement to help Biden win the election.
This means that 50 members of the Intelligence Committee lied to the American public at the behest of the Biden campaign to mitigate potential damage coming from the fallout of the Hunter Biden story. As of this writing, only right-leaning news outlets are covering this story.
Blinken emailed Morell a USA Today article reporting that the FBI was looking into whether Hunter’s laptop was part of a “disinformation campaign,” and Morell then reached out to other retired CIA officials, including John Brennan and Leon Panetta, to gather signatures for the letter discrediting The Post’s story. The letter alleged that The Post story “has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” It was used by Joe Biden during the October 22 debate against Donald Trump to deflect accusations about his involvement in his family’s international influence-peddling operation.
After the debate, Morell got a call from Steve Ricchetti, Chairman of the Biden campaign, thanking him for writing the statement. The letter was published by Politico on October 19 under the headline: “Hunter Biden story is Russian disinfo, dozens of former officials say.” Morell admitted that he may have spoken to the campaign on another occasion regarding the statement.
The House Judiciary Committee is now examining the origins of the letter and has requested assistance from Blinken, stating that the Biden campaign played an active role in the suppression of The Post’s reporting, which had a substantial impact on the 2020 election. Jordan and Turner, the committee members, have asked Blinken to provide all documents and communications related to the letter and disclose the identities of everyone involved in its inception, drafting, editing, signing, publishing, or promotion.
The fact that members of the Intelligence Community were willing to interfere with a presidential election at the bidding of a political campaign should be galling to everyone – regardless of political affiliation. This is problematic for a variety of reasons.
By falsely claiming that the story was Russian disinformation, the intelligence officials sought to discredit the story and prevent it from being widely disseminated, potentially influencing voters’ perception of the candidates in the 2020 presidential election. This misinformation campaign interfered with the public’s ability to make informed decisions during the election.
Secondly, it is unacceptable for members of the intelligence community to engage in partisan activities and use their authority to support a particular political candidate or party. In this case, the former acting CIA director Mike Morell admitted that he organized the letter to “help Vice President Biden…because I wanted him to win the election.” This shows a blatant misuse of intelligence resources and influence for partisan purposes, which is yet another reason why none of us should trust the government.
Thirdly, spreading this false information undermines the credibility of the intelligence community itself. The public relies on the intelligence community to provide accurate and unbiased information to protect national security and make informed policy decisions. When members of the intelligence community engage in spreading false information for partisan purposes, it erodes the trust and confidence that the public has in their work. Perhaps it is time for more Americans to realize the government is not their friend.
