Oscar Wilde in his 1889 essay, ‘The Decay of Lying’ wrote, “Life imitates art, far more often than art imitates life.” If Wilde is in a place where he can see our current culture, he is probably sitting there with a look of smug satisfaction on his face and deservedly so.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ opens this Friday. The hype and buzz has everybody talking about it. It came up as a topic of discussion on Melissa Harris-Perry’s show and at one point she began to opine on her view of Star Wars in the context of Darth Vader and of course, race. What she says is mind boggling but also hilarious. Watch:

For many of you, this sounds all too familiar. It makes Wilde look like a genius and director Kevin Smith, look like Nostradamus.

In the comedy ‘Chasing Amy’, Smith wrote an early scene that took place during a panel discussion at a comic book convention. A gay black comic book author, Hooper X, pretended at the behest of his publisher to be a black militant (he needed to sell the image to sell the book….’White Hating Coon’) and went on a rant on how Star Wars movies  “…are about how the white man keeps the brother man down, even in a galaxy far far away.” The part that is so prophetic is when he discusses Vader. Check it out:

Smith likely wrote that thinking, there is no way anybody could ever think this way about Star Wars. Turns out he was predicting the future.
