Today in History. 27 December 1945. The International Monetary Fund was formally established on this day in 1945. The years following the Great Depression led many countries to close their borders to trade believing that strict self-sufficiency would protect it from another depression. As has been proven time and again, protectionism can be a short-term solution, but it does not work as a matter of policy. No one country can thrive as an island.

The IMF was formed, in part, to provide a safety net for member-states in times of crisis to borrow money – conditionally – with the intent to limit bleed over from one country to another. The fund would thereby guarantee continued trade and that country’s ability to pay down its debt.
