During Tuesday’s CNN Milwaukee Republican Presidential Town Hall, Anderson Cooper asked Donald Trump about his tax returns, which the Donald first said he would release over a year ago. Trump told Cooper he would give him a letter confirming that Trump’s taxes have been continuously audited. During that exchange Trump made another monster gaffe. Trump spilled his beans that he has no intention of releasing his tax returns when he slipped up and said, “And only a fool would give a tax return…”

COOPER: A lot of other candidates have released tax returns. You say you won’t release them because you’re being audited. There are some people who doubt you’re even being audited or have been audited as much as…

TRUMP: Oh, I can give you a letter for that. Would you like a letter? I’ll give you…

COOPER: Can you?

TRUMP: I’ll give it to you, sure, absolutely.

COOPER: Because some people have raised that as a doubt.

TRUMP: And only a fool would give a tax return…

Trump spilling those slippery beans was probably overlooked because immediately after that exchange Trump revealed his lack of understanding of the federal government’s Constitutional role when  was asked what he thought are the top three functions of the United States government. You can watch trump include health care and education in his answer in this video. Considering all the gaffe’s Trump made this week, saying women should be punished for having abortions, calling education and health care as two of the top three functions of the federal government, saying Japan, Korea and Saudi Arabia should have nuclear weapons, makes one wonder if Trump is too old to be president.

Back to Trump’s tax returns. It was more than a year ago when Trump first said re would release his tax returns. He did so during an interview with talk radio host Hugh Hewitt on February 25, 2015, Donald Trump told Hewitt that he would “certainly” release his tax returns if he ran for president, saying he had “no objection” to the idea:

HH: Let me ask you this. On the day you declare, how many years of tax returns will you release? …

HH: Would you release tax returns, though?

DT: I would release tax returns…

DT: But we’ll take a good, strong look at that, Hugh. I mean, it’s obviously not something I thought of, but you know, I’ve given any real thought to, but I have no objection to certainly showing tax returns [emphasis added].

Trump has been leading us along, playing us for the suckers he believes we all are, ever since.

On October 4, 2015 Trump told George Stephanopoulos:

• “‘Maybe’ he’d [release them] when ‘we find out the true story on Hillary’s emails.'”

On January 24, 2016 Trump told Chuck Todd:

• “We’re working on that now.”
• “I have very big returns, as you know.”
• “I have everything all approved and very beautiful and we’ll be working that over in the next period of time.”

On February 14, 2016 Trump told John Dickerson:

• “[The returns will be released] over the next three, four months.”
• “We’re working on them very hard, and they will be very good.”
• But I have one the world’s most complicated tax returns. It’s a massive return. And — but I will get it done as soon as I can

And now we know, thanks to Trump spilling his beans, that he thinks “only a fool would give a tax return….” And one thing we can be certain about is that Trump does not think himself a fool.
