On Monday night, the nation watched an unsettling medical event unfold, when Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field from a cardiac event. Hamlin’s condition has improved greatly from what was a near-death experience, as gracious fans rejoice.

But, the same hopeful outcome was not found for students in Las Vegas, this week. Yes, I wrote students: as in plural.

On Friday, RedState reported that a 16-year-old high school girl collapsed after a game of flag football at Desert Oasis High School. Unfortunately, she did not survive.

Now, we learn that this is not the first sudden collapse and cardiac death of a Las Vegas high schooler, but the second this week. On Tuesday, the first day back from winter break, a male student suffered a similar fatal event in the restroom of a local charter school.

It is thought that while still a public school, the fact of it being outside of the school district garnered less awareness of this tragic event, as there were no statements made from public institutions, which happened in the wake of the previously reported student fatality.

The family has posted a fundraiser and in less than seven hours, raised over $19,000 of a $20,000 goal for funeral expenses. The family expressed that the young man, “…suddenly and unexpectedly suffered cardiac arrest while at school with no explanation as to why.” The young man was a high school senior, who planned to join the military after graduation. He is described as “an amazing kid who loved life to the fullest.”

While the nation celebrates the recovering football player with collective sentiments, it seems only fair to give equal attention to the fact that in Las Vegas: our students are not surviving. It’s a tragedy.
