There are some things you can’t unsee, and now you’re going to not unsee it with me.
A video has surfaced of Bernie Sanders while he was on a “honeymoon” trip with his wife to the USSR in 1988. The video itself features Sanders sitting around a table with a number of Russian locals all getting drunk together and singing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” For reasons unknown, everyone was shirtless.
Hats off to Sanders for at least being so comfortable in his own skin that he can take that grandpa bod into battle, but his body positivity is going to live in my mind forever, now.
The interesting part about this is that, according to Forward, this video has surfaced as a result of some Francis “Beto” O’Rourke fans trying to embarrass the worlds most favorite “democratic socialist.”
Travis Justin, a Navy veteran and leader of “Draft Beto 2020,” a group that is urging Texas representative Beto O’Rourke to seek presidential election, apparently first posted the video to Twitter. “Recently discovered footage from 1988 reveals a shirtless Bernie Sanders with his wife, Jane, on their honeymoon in the USSR, drunkenly singing ‘This Land Is Your Land’ with a group of presumed Soviets,” Justin captioned the clip, which was surfaced by another Sanders detractor on Twitter.
So Francis’s people are trying to lay Sanders low in order to give O’Rourke a smoother road to the general election stage. In most polls, O’Rourke places third in the top three candidates Democrats would like to see run in 2020 for President, with Sanders usually coming in at second under Joe Biden. It seems O’Rourke’s fans want him a little higher on the food chain.
I can tell you already that it’s a futile effort. People who go after politicians for having a good time typically find themselves the very subject of the ridicule they tried to create. You can ask Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh about that.
