If you live in Texas, you’ve probably received a text message from Sen. Ted Cruz’s challenger Beto O’Rourke’s campaign asking if they can rely on your support. You might have also gotten another one asking you for a favor.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, some supporters got texts asking if they would be willing to drive illegal immigrants to the polls during election time to help amp the vote up for Beto O’Rourke. 

According to the Washington Free Beacon, the O’Rourke campaign admits that the texts did indeed come from their campaign, but they were not authorized nor do they endorse them.

O’Rourke’s campaign claims someone accessed the text message system to send the text in question, but it was sent illicitly.

“That was not an approved message by the campaign,” spokesperson Chris Evans said.

The person who sent the text was “not a volunteer with the Beto campaign,” Evans said, calling the sender an “imposter.”

The text messaging application used by the O’Rourke campaign to reach voters is called Relay and has a wide reach. O’Rourke’s Republican opponent Sen. Ted Cruz has even received the text messages from the O’Rourke campaign.

It’s not been identified yet who managed to hijack the O’Rourke campaign’s text message system, but the text itself is likely inspired by O’Rourke’s positions on immigration. According to O’Rourke, he’s open to abolishing ICE and has referred to illegal immigrants as “members of our community.”
