Throughout the year, we have (dis)honored the press with our regular feature commemorating the efforts of press unprofessionalism, journalistic sloth, and generally deserved media mockery. After months of doling out nominations for fractured journalism practices, now it is time for: The Golden Remington Awards.
Our Trophy is a nod to the olden days when hard-scrabble hacks committed actual journalism, hammering out dispatches on those hefty wordsmith devices. To commemorate that past of muckraking reporting and shoe leather investigation, we acknowledge those journalists or outlets who fall short of that once respectable goal.
This first in a three-part ceremony where we will hand out the technical honors. The nominees will be listed, with the winner declared in each. Let us now adjust our tuxedos and take the stage as we recognize some of the most galling examples in journalism in 2025. Here are the winners of The Remmys.
THE JENNIFER RUBIN COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL - Sponsored by MemorAll Supplements
[ Honoring those who defy their own prior stance on a subject ]
Ashley Parker - The Atlantic: D.C. resident Parker declared boldly that there was no need for President Trump’s anti-crime actions taken in her city. This claim was effectively contradicted — by Parker herself. She posted months earlier that her family had endured several thefts at their residence.
Peter Baker - The New York Times: Pete was also very bothered by the anti-crime push in D.C. He declared there was no crime problem in the capital city; then, when troops went in, he said they were not in the crime-ridden areas.
Juliette Kayyem - CNN: Ms. Kayyem was expressing support for the anti-deportation protests in L.A. and stating the president was out of line for sending in troops. She was reminded of the time she was opposing the Canadian trucker protest and called for authorities to bust that resistance.
Jake Tapper - CNN: After the release of his book on the Biden cover-up, he praised two Wall Street Journal reporters who made an early report on Biden’s condition. He also slammed those who criticised their article. Yet, Jake was initially among those critical of their reporting.
WINNER Nicolle Wallace - MSNBC: She actually had the nerve to say no Democrats have called President Trump a “Nazi”. She had to be reminded of the numerous guests and she herself, who had engaged in that very practice.
🚨NEW: MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace *ACTUALLY* claims no Democrats have ever implied "TRUMP IS HITLER"🚨

THE XX-PERTS OPINION AMBER SERVING TRAY - Sponsored by Dos Equis Beer
[ Honoring the use of experts to push a narrative ]
Kelly Hooper, Robert King - Politico: They managed to get some on the record blaming Trump for the fiasco that is Obamacare.
John Miller - CNN: The network’s chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst was brought in to discuss the Brown University shooting. He declared gun laser sights are something only professionals or military personnel use. Or, to help out John here, those who use Nerf guns.
Asia Grace - New York Post: Citing an Australian study, we are told experts suggest acquiring consent from infants before changing their diaper.
NPR - An internal memo dictated that a particular professor should no longer be used as an expert after it was discovered that he had been cited for an opinion in over 70 different reports at the outlet.
WINNER - Nathaniel Meyersohn - CNN: After Zohran Mamdani was roundly mocked for his plan of city-owned and operated grocery stores – and after the plan was tried and failed in other cities - CNN found experts to say the idea has merit.
Zohran Mamdani, the favorite to become New York City's next mayor after winning the Democratic primary, has a contentious plan to create a network of city-owned grocery stores. But it's less radical than critics portray, some food policy and grocery industry experts say.…

CNN – Once this one was noticed by viewers, they completely missed the details of the report.
Try to imagine how @CNN would be reacting if Fox News made this Obama blunder on a Chyron...@JakeTaper would be in full condescension mode, and @BrianStelter would have days of material. pic.twitter.com/AOW2NNKLDr

ESPN – As the network was extensively covering the NBA gambling scandal, they were promoting their own betting platform on screen.
This is pretty funny, an ESPN Bet promo is on the screen while ESPN discusses the NBA sports gambling scandal. pic.twitter.com/r0BhYwEg4O

WTOC 11 Savanah – When using a voice-to-text prompt, you MUST double-check your work! For the record, you spell his name with an “X” – Penix.

THE SILVER RICECAKE PLATTER - Sponsored by Quaker
[ Honoring content-free reporting ]
Minnesota Star Tribune – The favorite paper of Gov. Tim Walz felt it was vital to report that when the governor was in D.C. to speak at a hearing, he chose to drink Diet Mountain Dew while testifying.
Nika Shakhnazarova - New York Post: Reporting on Prince Hank and his wife is already inconsequential. When you write a full post on why they address each by their initials, well, you have delivered worthlessness.
Curtis Bunn - NBC News: In a lengthy piece, Bunn features several people who engage in various pursuits, such as scuba diving or playing golf. The significance we have to guess is the color of their skin. So, we learn that…black people have hobbies???
USA Today: They covered a protest in Oregon where residents stood up to the presence of ICE by staging a “Sweating to the Fascists” group aerobics session. If you are wondering what the reaction of ICE was or what this protest accomplished, you will be left wanting for information.
WINNER Gina Cherelus - New York Times: You might think the saga of drinking water in a yoga class is not newsworthy, but that is why you do not work at the New York Times. Ms. Cherlus heard the story of a woman who was in a hot yoga session, grabbed her water bottle, and was told by the instructor it was not the proper time, and she got to digging into the details. The woman was not prevented from drinking, but she went on TikTok to complain that she felt shamed. This provoked a 1,500-word treatise with nine accompanying photos where the yoga studio went on the record, a college professor was interviewed for comment on the matter, and ultimately, the instructor was relieved of her duties.

THE SAM ADAMS TANKARD FOR CREATIVE JOURNALISM - Sponsored by The Boston Beer Company
[ Honoring fraudulent news reporting in the spirit of Samuel Adams during his days as a newspaper publisher ]
CBS News: In a 60 Minutes segment, the show featured two fired workers from USAID who were crying about not knowing how to support their families. It was learned they were not from the agency but are contract consultants, one a former speechwriter for Samantha Power, who is a former head of USAID.
Erkki Forster - The Daily Beast: In an explosive expose, The Beast said President Trump once offered a female member of Congress his bed on Air Force One, as long as she did not tell his wife. This exploded in their faces. It was Anna Paulina Luna who was pregnant at the time, and Trump asked if she’d be more comfortable during the flight, as her husband was also in attendance.
Korsha Wilson - New York Times: The piece states boldly that egg prices were so high that for Easter, Americans turned to dyeing potatoes for the holiday. Okay, first problem: By April, the price of eggs was lower than when Trump took office. Second, they had no proof or witnesses of this; it was based on a how-to video. Found on TikTok.
The BBC: Britain’s news outlet was scorched over a documentary featuring youths trying to survive in Gaza during the war. Initially called a BBC production, problems emerged when it was found that the children involved were family members of Hamas. After denials and revisions, they stated this was a Palestinian production - then the broadcaster took down the documentary entirely as it was shown to be Hamas propaganda.
WINNER Jim Acosta – Independent: CNN must be relieved to know they sent off Acosta at the start of the year after this display. Acosta interviewed with a student who died in the Parkland High School shooting years ago. This was done as his parents have crafted an AI version of their dead son, and Jim spoke with the “student” about gun control.
A show you don’t want to miss at 4p ET / 1p PT. I’ll be having a one of a kind interview with Joaquin Oliver. He died in the Parkland school shooting in 2018. But his parents have created an AI version of their son to deliver a powerful message on gun violence. Plus Texas State… pic.twitter.com/mbdM2WxwUR

[ For delivering the best quote of the year ]
Al Sharpton - MSNBC - Referring to the Founders who were revolutionaries: “Can you imagine reading that James Madison or Thomas Jefferson tried to overthrow the government?”
David Brooks - PBS - In comments on the Texas redistricting effort: “What Trump ordered [Gov. Greg] Abbott to do in Texas is mustard gas on our democracy."
Mark Leibovich - The Atlantic - Discussing the revelations of covering up Biden’s mental slide in the book “Original Sin”: “Here is why I think that the ‘cover-up’ of Biden’s ‘true condition’ is beside the point—and why I’m not really vibing with the umbrage-mongering: It’s pretty much impossible to ‘cover up’ for something that is hiding in plain sight.”
Christiane Amanpour - PBS - On her concerns over immigration roundups: “I must say, I was afraid. I’m a foreigner, I don’t have a green card, I’m not an American citizen, I’m fairly prominent – and I literally prepared to go to America as if I was going to North Korea. I took a burner phone…imagine that!”
WINNER Scott MacFarlane - CBS News - Discussing the Trump rally where the assassination attempt took place and saying the crowd nearly attacked him: "I got diagnosed with PTSD within 48 hours. I got put on trauma leave, not because, I think, of the shooting, but because, you could - you saw it in the eyes, the reaction of the people. They were coming for us. If he didn't jump up with his fist, they were going to come kill us."
CBS's Scott MacFarlane claims that after Trump was shot "I got diagnosed with PTSD within 48 hours.
