Throughout the year, we have (dis)honored the press with our regular feature commemorating the efforts of press unprofessionalism, journalistic sloth, and generally deserved media mockery. After months of doling out nominations for fractured journalism practices, now it is time for: The Golden Remington Awards.
Our Trophy is a nod to the olden days when hard-scrabble hacks committed actual journalism, hammering out dispatches on those hefty wordsmith devices. To commemorate that past of muckraking reporting and shoe leather investigation, we acknowledge those journalists or outlets who fall short of that once respectable goal.
This first in a three-part ceremony where we will hand out the technical honors. The nominees will be listed, with the winner declared in each. Let us now adjust our tuxedos and take the stage as we recognize some of the most galling examples in journalism in 2025. Here are the winners of The Remmys.

Ashley Parker - The Atlantic: D.C. resident Parker declared boldly that there was no need for President Trump’s anti-crime actions taken in her city. This claim was effectively contradicted — by Parker herself. She posted months earlier that her family had endured several thefts at their residence.
Peter Baker - The New York Times: Pete was also very bothered by the anti-crime push in D.C. He declared there was no crime problem in the capital city; then, when troops went in, he said they were not in the crime-ridden areas.
Juliette Kayyem - CNN: Ms. Kayyem was expressing support for the anti-deportation protests in L.A. and stating the president was out of line for sending in troops. She was reminded of the time she was opposing the Canadian trucker protest and called for authorities to bust that resistance.
Jake Tapper - CNN: After the release of his book on the Biden cover-up, he praised two Wall Street Journal reporters who made an early report on Biden’s condition. He also slammed those who criticised their article. Yet, Jake was initially among those critical of their reporting.
WINNER Nicolle Wallace - MSNBC: She actually had the nerve to say no Democrats have called President Trump a “Nazi”. She had to be reminded of the numerous guests and she herself, who had engaged in that very practice.

WINNER - Nathaniel Meyersohn - CNN: After Zohran Mamdani was roundly mocked for his plan of city-owned and operated grocery stores – and after the plan was tried and failed in other cities - CNN found experts to say the idea has merit.

USA Today: They covered a protest in Oregon where residents stood up to the presence of ICE by staging a “Sweating to the Fascists” group aerobics session. If you are wondering what the reaction of ICE was or what this protest accomplished, you will be left wanting for information.
WINNER Gina Cherelus - New York Times: You might think the saga of drinking water in a yoga class is not newsworthy, but that is why you do not work at the New York Times. Ms. Cherlus heard the story of a woman who was in a hot yoga session, grabbed her water bottle, and was told by the instructor it was not the proper time, and she got to digging into the details. The woman was not prevented from drinking, but she went on TikTok to complain that she felt shamed. This provoked a 1,500-word treatise with nine accompanying photos where the yoga studio went on the record, a college professor was interviewed for comment on the matter, and ultimately, the instructor was relieved of her duties.

CBS News: In a 60 Minutes segment, the show featured two fired workers from USAID who were crying about not knowing how to support their families. It was learned they were not from the agency but are contract consultants, one a former speechwriter for Samantha Power, who is a former head of USAID.
Erkki Forster - The Daily Beast: In an explosive expose, The Beast said President Trump once offered a female member of Congress his bed on Air Force One, as long as she did not tell his wife. This exploded in their faces. It was Anna Paulina Luna who was pregnant at the time, and Trump asked if she’d be more comfortable during the flight, as her husband was also in attendance.
Korsha Wilson - New York Times: The piece states boldly that egg prices were so high that for Easter, Americans turned to dyeing potatoes for the holiday. Okay, first problem: By April, the price of eggs was lower than when Trump took office. Second, they had no proof or witnesses of this; it was based on a how-to video. Found on TikTok.
The BBC: Britain’s news outlet was scorched over a documentary featuring youths trying to survive in Gaza during the war. Initially called a BBC production, problems emerged when it was found that the children involved were family members of Hamas. After denials and revisions, they stated this was a Palestinian production - then the broadcaster took down the documentary entirely as it was shown to be Hamas propaganda.
WINNER Jim Acosta – Independent: CNN must be relieved to know they sent off Acosta at the start of the year after this display. Acosta interviewed with a student who died in the Parkland High School shooting years ago. This was done as his parents have crafted an AI version of their dead son, and Jim spoke with the “student” about gun control.
