It didn't take long for the relative political calm of President Donald Trump's first few days in office to subside, and the Democratic Party is growing more and more unhinged as the weeks pass.
The perfect illustration of that happened outside the Department of Education on Friday, where Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) verbally accosted a security guard, demanding entry. Why were they there? That's a good question given members of Congress serve their function inside the Capitol Building, not at an executive-controlled agency. Of course, the answer is to create a spectacle.

They just keep doubling down on this stuff. I don’t get it. Do they like losing elections? pic.twitter.com/PELkJdkalU

Not surprisingly, the Democrat entourage harassed the man, accusing him of racism and suggesting that blocking the door was akin to stopping integration during the Civil Rights era. Unmentioned is that it was the Democratic Party that was responsible for that oppression, but self-awareness is hardly a quality of the far left.
But should we even be calling it the far left at this point? This type of deranged behavior is mainstream among Democrat politicians and activists alike. Another example was provided on Thursday when Democrats lost their minds on the Senate floor during the confirmation vote for now-Office and Management and Budget Director Russ Vought. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)

What we are seeing is a political party in the midst of a nervous breakdown. Over the last decade, Democrats have jettisoned any coherent identity, centering themselves on opposition to Donald Trump. They were so certain they were going to win in 2024 and finally vanquish their nemesis (as well as throw him in jail), that they simply do not know how to respond to the current reality.
Common sense would say to step back, take a breath, and regroup with a strategy to regain the trust of voters, but common sense isn't on the menu. Instead, Democrats have chosen to not only double down on their left-wing lunacy, but they've chosen to do so with all the tactical precision of a small child kicking and screaming on the floor.
Normal Americans are not watching Maxine Waters berate a lowly federal employee for the cameras and thinking, "You know, we should put those people back in charge." That should be obvious to everyone, yet it's not obvious to Democrats. They truly believe that if they just scream loud enough, they'll be able to click their heels three times and be transported back to 2021 again, when their power was unchecked, and the bureaucracies could be used to do their bidding.
Recall the behavior of Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) during Pete Hegseth's confirmation hearing in which she started berating the now-Secretary of Defense over whether he had ever conducted an audit before.

You don't need an audit if you run your organization well. pic.twitter.com/5OYtqEILq9
That entire hearing was a circus, with Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and others likewise ranting and raving for hours on end. And lest you think I'm just picking on female politicians, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also had a similar breakdown recently.
The common thread is a complete unwillingness to accept that elections have consequences and that they lost. Democrats do not know how to react when they can't bully their way through government, ensuring that the voters are made irrelevant. Thus, we get the current nervous breakdown, and there are no easy answers for Democrats.
On one end, you have an aging, lunatic establishment. On the other end, you have a younger, lunatic base. Both of them want no part of any congruent, workable strategy to win elections again and are content to keep yelling at clouds all day for press plaudits. What exactly would be the turning point for the Democratic Party? Who would even step in to return sanity to its ranks? How can a party thoroughly committed to unpopular radicalism regain its appeal? Maybe someone has some ideas, but I sure don't.
Editor's Note: This article was updated post-publication to note that Sen. Gillibrand is from NY, not CA. We regret the error.
