There hasn’t been a lot of good news over the last week, but one bright spot has emerged. According to RedState’s prior reporting, a federal court in Texas struck down Joe Biden’s illegal student loan forgiveness plan.

The plan would have cost American taxpayers somewhere between $500 billion and $1 trillion, with none of it being appropriated by Congress. Now, the Biden administration, contrary to past claims that they’d keep the process open, has shut down anyone from applying to have their student loans “canceled.”

That’s a pretty big signal that the White House expects to lose this fight in the end. That’s a good bet since it will eventually end up at the US Supreme Court, which has been none-too-kind to Biden’s executive overreaches. The president does not have the authority to unilaterally burden taxpayers with a huge new debt in order to benefit a small subset of Americans, many of which are already well off or have the education to end up well off. Making a welder pay for a pre-med student’s vacation is obscene.

Unfortunately, while Biden’s student loan scam looks as if it’ll never go into effect, the damage has already been done. Younger voters flocked to the Democratic Party during the 2022 election, believing that daddy government was coming to save them from their chosen obligations. That had some non-negligible effect on knocking down the red wave that everyone thought was coming prior to Tuesday. With the election now over, those people are learning that they got grifted, and I certainly feel no sympathy toward them.

What’s so disturbing, though, is that Biden is going to get away with it. Yes, his silly, unlawful plan has been struck down. Yes, the Supreme Court is probably going to follow the same path. Yet, the President of the United States was able to essentially buy an election by giving an illegal order, knowing that it would never see the light of day.

Think about all the abuses of power that incentivizes. Need to win a mid-term? Just sign an order giving a huge block of people free stuff. By the time they realize they aren’t getting said free stuff, their votes will have already been locked in, and there’s nothing they can do about it. Or better yet, how about just draining the nation’s strategic oil reserves with the stroke of a pen in order to artificially keep the price of gas off its previous highs?

What makes this all the more infuriating is that no one seems to care outside of a few voices on the right. Biden corruptly used his office to improperly influence an election, and the worst that will happen to him is a few chastizing lines in a legal opinion. Until there are actual consequences for presidents who purposely ignore the law for political gain, things will only escalate further, and I don’t think that leads anywhere nice.
