Unconfirmed reports indicate that nine firefighters and two police officers were shot during the attack. Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders to Canfield Mountain in Coeur d'Alene.
The incident began Sunday afternoon, and authorities believe it might have been a set-up:
The incident unfolded at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time after a small but growing brush fire broke out on Canfield Mountain Sunday afternoon.
When fire personnel responded to the blaze about half an hour later, they started getting shot at by an unknown person, or persons, in the woods, officials said.
Norris said that the situation remains active and that authorities are currently taking fire from multiple directions on the mountain.
Civilians are also coming down off the mountain and could be stuck amid the blaze, Norris said.
Law enforcement is investigating whether the fire could have been intentionally set in order to lure first responders to the scene, Kootenai County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Howard told ABC News.

Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris held a news conference and described the plight of residents in the area.
"We now have two deaths. We have an unknown amount of casualties," Norris said. "We still have civilians that are coming off of that mountain. We might have civilians that are stuck or in shock on that mountain. So this is a very, very fresh situation."
The search for the assailant or assailants is ongoing, and a helicopter is currently over the area trying to locate the shooter(s). ABC News reports that the scene “is considered an active shooter situation and a shelter-in-place order has been issued for Canfield Mountain Trailhead and the surrounding area.”
Hopefully the next story we bring you on this tragedy will be that the sick attacker(s) have been captured or removed from the earth.
