President-elect Donald Trump is holding a press conference from Mar-a-Lago Tuesday, and there will be all sorts of news coming out of it. But one thing has already caught people’s attention because it’s so… Trumpian: he wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Gotta love it.

Mexico is taking advantage of us, he argued:

President-elect Trump on Tuesday told reporters he wants to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America as he bemoaned that Mexico was taking advantage of the United States on trade and immigration.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump said. “What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

Trump has been talking tough about Mexico and Canada and how they‘re not playing fair, and on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he was resigning.

Trump made the comments as he complained that the U.S. had a large trade deficit with both Mexico and Canada. He has raised similar concerns since winning November’s election and vowed to impose steep tariffs on both neighboring countries.

Both outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo have spoken with Trump in recent months about his tariff threats.

Trump on Tuesday bashed Mexico as a “very dangerous place” that was “essentially run by the cartels.”

He suggested Canada merge with the U.S. after Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday.

After Trudeau Resigns, Trump Reacts to the Big Announcement

The name “Gulf of Mexico” first appeared centuries ago:

The Gulf of Mexico is a body of water that is bordered by the United States on the north and Mexico on the west and south; its eastern boundary is a line drawn from the western tip of the Florida Keys to the northeastern corner of the Yucatán Peninsula. The European discoverer of the Gulf was Sebastián de Ocampo, who sailed around the western end of Cuba in 1508. The earliest maps referred to the Gulf as Seno Mejicano or Golfo de la Nueva España, but it was named Golfo Mexicano on the 1569 Mercator map. The Gulf covers about 590,000 square miles and is bordered by continental shelves that vary between 30 and 90 miles in width.

One thing about Trump—he is never boring.
