The ardent leftist has spent nearly a decade in power, but in recent years, his popularity has plummeted, and President-elect Donald Trump has threatened huge tariffs and joked that Canada should become the 51st state.
An official said that Trudeau will stay on as prime minister until a new leader of the Liberal Party is chosen. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak ahead of an official announcement Monday.
When elected in 2015, the 53-year-old leader was celebrated for steering Canada back toward its liberal roots. However, in recent years, his popularity has waned, coinciding with significant political and economic challenges for the country.

The somber PM talked about his family:
Over the holidays, I've also had a chance to reflect and have had long talks with my family about our future. Throughout the course of my career, any success I have personally achieved has been because of their support and with their encouragement. So last night over dinner, I told my kids about the decision that I'm sharing with you today. I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process.
His resignation leaves an uncertain future for the Great White North:
Trudeau’s resignation means the Liberal Party can appoint an interim prime minister to lead the country until the elections next fall, giving them potentially a fighting chance to bring renewed support back to the Liberal Party.
It remains unclear who will likely take over Trudeau’s seat, but [finance minister Dominic LeBlanc] – who also met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence earlier this month alongside the former prime minister – was reported to be a leading contender.
Trump has not yet publicly commented on Trudeau's resignation and his transition team did not respond to previous Fox News Digital questions over his impact on Canadian politics.
The resignation also marks the increasing power of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. As Bonchie wrote:
The Liberals will no doubt seek a narrative shift by bringing on a fresh face before voters go to the polls [in October]. That seems like a lost cause, though, given just how popular Poilievre has become. He recently gave one of the greatest political speeches in modern history, drawing plaudits from around the world.
Change is coming to Canada.
