As we reported, First Son Hunter Biden was convicted Tuesday on all three counts related to deliberately lying about his crack cocaine addiction on a federal gun purchase form in order to buy a .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver on Oct. 12, 2018. He faces up to 25 years in prison.

President Joe Biden quickly issued a statement supporting his son and saying that he will “accept the outcome of this case,” although he also noted that Hunter is considering an appeal.

“As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal,” the president said in the statement. That would seem to indicate he has no plans to pardon his son. However, his calculus could certainly change if Hunter is sentenced to time behind bars. If he loses the election, the elder Biden might reconsider, but on the other hand, if somehow he should win, he’d have no reason not to pardon him then either—this will be his final election, win or lose.

However, as much as I dislike the president’s policies and his constant lying, this statement strikes the correct tone. As a father of a young man, I can sympathize—luckily my son has not gone down a lascivious, drug-fueled path, but if he did, I would do everything in my power to turn him around and I would stand by him even if he was facing federal charges. One can feel a certain level of empathy for a man who has just found out his one remaining son has been convicted and could serve time.

However, as some pundits have pointed out, the Biden family‘s alleged real crimes—influence peddling at the highest levels—have still gone unpunished. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) took notice:

Today’s verdict is a step toward accountability but until the Department of Justice investigates everyone involved in the Bidens’ corrupt influence peddling schemes that generated over $18 million in foreign payments to the Biden family, it will be clear department officials continue to cover for the Big Guy, Joe Biden.

A sentencing date for Hunter has not yet been set, although the judge indicated that sentencing is usually set for 120 days following a verdict, which means it would occur before election day.
