Not Getting It: ABC News Reporter Hit by Smash-and-Grab Robbery, Feels 'Sad for the Folks That Do This'

ABC News Meteorologist Ginger Zee became another in a long line of folks in Oakland victimized by lawlessness in the northern California city as her vehicle was subject to a smash-and-grab robbery this week, which she shared on Instagram Wednesday. While I sympathize with her situation, she also summed up the problem emanating from America’s left these days, which always sympathizes with the criminal rather than the victim. She feels "sad" for the perps:

"Smash & grab was NOT what we had on our bingo card … that’s for sure. Grateful to be safe, the stuff they stole will be replaced… but it makes me sad for the folks that do this. Whatever circumstance gets someone to that choice of crime, I hope you know you stole things that are very meaningful to me too— items my kids made me I travel with etc, passport, my glasses - all of which I’m sure is trashed and the tech is being sold," she wrote.

Seriously, Ginger, can’t you just call out the fact that the people who did this to you are criminals and should be brought to justice—instead, you feel the need to express your sadness for the “folks that do this?” How about mad

You imply that they are somehow victims who were forced to smash your car and take your stuff, even though that was their free will, and they made that choice.

Where is your sadness for the countless victims of crime every single day in Oakland?

“Whatever circumstance gets someone to that choice of crime,” she writes, implying that some force of nature forced them to do it. No, the criminals decided they wanted to take your stuff, and in California these days, they know they can get away with it, so I can’t for the life of me fathom why you feel “sad” for them.

Rampant crime has made Oakland virtually unlivable for residents at this point – where’s your post detailing sadness for them?

Zee’s experience resembles that of all too many Oakland residents these days. Instead of demanding change and accountability, some continue to glorify the plight of the criminals. Often, they're not struggling individuals just trying to get by; many of these smash-and-grab operations are run by organized gangs, hardly people who deserve a lot of sympathy.

Zee described everyday life in Oakland as if it was all just normal:

Something we learned and I want to pass on: they have been targeting rental vehicles & specifically hatchbacks. Our items were not in plain sight, low, covered etc and we were only grabbing food and using the bathroom. 20 min tops. Car was parked right across the street from the salad joint we stopped at between shoots. It was a beautiful sunny day, about 2 pm. Lesson learned: bring everything inside with you at all times no matter where you are.

That's life in Alameda County these days. Violent crime, robbery, and vehicle theft in Oakland increased by 21 percent, 38 percent, and 45 percent, respectively, in 2023. But let’s feel sorry for the perps.

Note: On Thursday, Newsweek asked Zee to comment on criticism that she was "condoning crime" with her apparent soft spot for criminals. She denied that's what she was doing.

"I am not condoning crime - I no longer have a passport, I don't have items my children gave me for when I travel that can't be replaced - I am livid. I just hate that someone chooses this. I am not condoning crime."

Sorry, Ginger, but the internet is forever, and so is your comment, "...it makes me sad for the folks that do this." Whether that's condoning crime or something else is up to interpretation, but it certainly qualifies as coddling criminals.
