As the 250th birthday of our nation gets closer, most Americans have been reflecting on just how lucky we all are to have been born in the greatest nation in history. During this time, we are celebrating freedom, liberty, and the idea that if you work hard, chances are you can be or do anything you want. But none of us would be here if it weren't for one other thing we should celebrate too.

Americans in 2026 now live twice as long as they did in 1776. At the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, historians put the average life expectancy at around 35 to 40 years old. If you survived your childhood in the new nation, chances are you would live into your 60s or 70s. Currently, the average lifespan is 79 years old.
We know many of the reasons Americans are living longer. Great strides in basic knowledge of things like sanitation, clean water, nutrition, vaccinations, and medical care, along with greatly reduced infant death rates from infectious diseases, have continued to lower mortality rates. Dr. Omer Awan is a physician and professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In addition to infant and child death rates, he stated:
"Childbirth was dangerous, and without antibiotics and vaccines, many infectious diseases, such as measles, smallpox and pneumonia, were deadly. Now we have cleaner water and sanitation, vaccines and antibiotics that have significantly prolonged life."
Here are just a few advancements in American life since we pushed the Redcoats back across the pond to where they came from. In 1857, the first sewer system was built in Brooklyn. This gave people more access to clean drinking water and better waste disposal as indoor plumbing became more widespread. In 1878, the Federal Quarantine Act was passed, which allowed the government to prevent infectious diseases like yellow fever. By 1900, life expectancy in the U.S. was at 49 years old, and in 1906, the Pure Food and Drug Act and Federal Meat Inspection Act were passed. Vaccines were also being developed for diseases such as smallpox, polio, measles, and influenza.

The development of antibiotics in the 40s helped push life expectancy even higher. By 1950, it was around 68 years old. Since then, knowledge gained about ways to prevent heart disease and stroke and informing the public about the dangers of smoking have also reduced lung cancer rates. Gone are the days when the kids would pile in the way back of the station wagon with no seat belts. Automobiles have become safer, and car seats are mandatory.

Today, however, Americans face new life expectancy challenges. Rising deaths from opioid overdoses, suicide, and alcohol-related causes—particularly among younger Americans—eroded years of progress between 2014 and 2026. COVID-19 reduced life expectancy by two years between 2019 and 2021 before it bounced back.
America's Founding Fathers envisioned a nation where life got better, and maybe even longer for everyone. It's just another reason Americans have so much to celebrate this Fourth of July.
