Sadly, Americans have gotten all too comfortable with school shootings. We have seen them happen from elementary schools all the way up to college campuses. Because the targets of these attacks are children and young people, we want the shooter to be apprehended immediately. It takes a combination of good police work, combined with help from the public, who want to play an active part in keeping their community safe. Recently, another school shooting took place, this time on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. However, the shooting is no longer the story; it's the utter absurdity of the investigation.

This most recent attack took the lives of two students and injured nine others. Brown University is an urban campus with residential neighborhoods all around it. In 2025, one should reasonably expect that when you walk out of your house, you are on camera, especially with the advent of Ring residential door cameras. And that happened. Police are attempting to identify a person of interest seen on multiple Ring cameras in the area before and after the shooting.

It is here that the investigation has taken a downright comical turn. If it wasn't literally deadly serious, it almost sounds like a "Police Academy" movie. So far, authorities have no idea who the person of interest is, even though Brown University has 1,200 security cameras around campus, but none on the perimeter to see who is coming or going. But that is just the tip of the Keystone Cops iceberg. Authorities do not know how many students were in the room at the time of the shooting, and they have no list of possible witnesses.

Surveillance footage aside, the real story here is the complete and total ineptness of those conducting the investigation, and the DEI mess that is Brown University and the surrounding Providence area. Let's start with Brown University Public Safety Chief Rodney Chatman. Before his current gig at Brown, Chatman was the head of Campus Security at the University of Utah. Immediately upon his hiring in Utah, he was suspended for not having the proper credentials. Utah gave him a choice: quit or be fired. Chatman resigned. Just before the shooting, Brown's Police Union issued a no-confidence vote against Chatman. Officers said he endangered them and created a "toxic workplace culture." As you might guess at a prestigious East Coast Ivy League school, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is king. Brown University President Christina H. Paxon has consistently caved to left-wing campus groups.
But the DEI mess doesn't come to a stop off campus. Because "firsts" are important when your focus is DEI, Providence, Rhode Island's chief of Police is Oscar L. Perez, Jr., the first Latino police chief. But Chief Perez may have a problem in the form of his nephew, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for running one of the largest fentanyl rings in Rhode Island. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley promoted Perez, knowing about his nephew's legal troubles. The reason: to "diversify" the department. Last but certainly not least is the Providence City Council Chief of Staff, someone named June Rose. "June" uses they/them pronouns and was arrested in March for protesting in front of Trump Tower.
Two people are dead, including the vice president of the campus Republican Club; however, it is unknown if that is a motive for the shooting. But don't worry, this band of DEI warriors is on the case. What could possibly go wrong?
