JD Vance Visits Ohio to 'Celebrate the One Big Beautiful Bill,' Also Addresses Violent Cincinnati Attack

Vice President JD Vance returned to his home state of Ohio on Monday, with his chief goal being to, as his office put it, "celebrate the one big beautiful bill." Vance spoke at Metallus Inc. in Canton, Ohio, to promote President Donald Trump's sweeping bill, which was signed into law by Trump on July 4. Vance also addressed other topics included in the measure, such as border security, deportation of criminal illegal immigrants, and getting drug cartels out of the U.S. He took a few questions from the media as well, including about a violent incident that took place in Cincinnati over the weekend.

Because if you're spending hard hours away from your family, the federal government ought to keep its hands the hell out of your pocket when you're doing it. And that's one thing that Big, Beautiful Bill changed.

Vance spoke about a topic near and dear to the hearts of American steelworkers: President Trump's tariffs. He stated that when Trump took office, one of the main goals of his administration was to reward American companies for investing in American workers. But he also held out a carrot of reward for foreign countries looking to invest in the U.S., stating,

"Donald J. Trump took office and said, you know, if you want to build something in Mexico or China or some other foreign country and dump it into the United States of America, you are going to pay a big fat penalty. You're going to pay a tariff before you dump these products into our country. And you know what that did? That put the entire world on notice that America was back. And if you wanted to build and invest in America, you were going to be rewarded. But if you wanted to build and invest somewhere else, you were not going to be rewarded. And that put the entire world on notice. And it had to happen. Because for 40 years while those great American factories closed their doors, we know what went right along with them. It was great American jobs, was great American dignity, and it was great American wages."

Earlier this month, Vance was in Pennsylvania, where he touted the big beautiful bill's tax deductions on overtime to employees at an industrial machine shop.

Vance also talked up the billions in the big, beautiful bill for border security. He asked, "How many of us know somebody who has lost relatives, a son or a daughter, mom or dad, to fentanyl that the Mexican drug cartels bring into this country? To the poison that we allow foreign criminal organizations to bring into our country?" He added that the bill will "allow the United States to take control of its country once again, and kick those drug cartels the hell out of the United States of America."

Vance also took questions from the media. One question was about an incident that my colleague Ward Clark reported on Monday that took place in Cincinnati at a jazz festival over the weekend. Cellphone video appeared to show a group of black teens violently attacking and beating a white man and woman. There are still very few details, and what exactly happened remains sketchy. Vance stated he "had not seen the full context," but what he had seen appeared to be "a mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person, and it's disgusting, and I hope every single one of those people who engaged in violence is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Vance went on to say that "we've had way too much lawlessness on the streets of great American cities." He also asked how many of those in attendance have wanted to go to downtown areas in their city but were too afraid because of "street violence." He added, "We have got to make great American cities safe again for families and children." He added that "local authorities in these big cities have allowed lawlessness to run wild." Vance stated bluntly that "The ONLY WAY to destroy that street violence is to take the thugs...and throw their asses in PRISON!"

The visit to Metallus Inc. was also a strategic one for Vice President Vance. It sits in the district of Rep. Emilia Sykes (D-OH), and is one that the Republican National Congressional Committee (NRCC) believes is ripe for flipping in the 2026 midterm elections.
