Here's the Latest Idea for the White House to Bypass Legacy Media, and It's Glorious

In 2015, when Donald Trump came down the escalator in Trump Tower to announce he was running for president, it was like nothing we had ever seen before. Here was a guy who had hobnobbed with politicians of both parties in his capacity as an international businessman, but was a political novice. As soon as he started to speak, red flags went up for the mainstream media. This was not the average Republican whom the media could destroy whenever they wanted, however. Covering Donald Trump would require a whole other special set of rules. During Trump's first term, they implemented those rules. But now, there is a whole new set of rules for dealing with them.

In yet one more way to bypass the rapidly and increasingly irrelevant mainstream media, the White House has announced the launch of what they are describing as a "Drudge-style" website that will promote pro-Trump stories and give accurate information on what is happening throughout the administration. The new site is called "White House Wire." One White House official summed up its purpose this way:

"To give pro-Trump influencers a central hub to disseminate Trump-favorable coverage. It's a place for supporters of the president's agenda to get the real news all in one place in a shareable and readable format. The website will be a one-stop shop for news and is part of the Trump administration's effort to provide transparency and institute policies that put America first."

The site links to a variety of different media outlets. A sampling of headlines and links from the site on Tuesday, April 29, included "THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FIRST 100 DAYS IN PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY," and linked to a Fox News story. Another read, "Border shutdown tops list of Trump's successes at 100 days," and linked to a story in the Washington Times. There was also a link to an Op-Ed at Newsweek written by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) entitled, "The President's First 100 Days Is a Return to American Greatness," and a link to Trump's interview with ABC News. A ticker at the top of the site page read, "24/7 FORTY-SEVEN."

Permanent seats in the White House Briefing Room have been controlled for decades by the White House Correspondents' Association, but no longer. It has been the focus of a major shake-up during Trump's second term, and the media has no one to blame but themselves. Reporters from mainstream media dinosaur outlets have been camped out in coveted front row seats for decades. Now, new seats have been added for non-traditional new media outlets like independent journalists, websites, and podcasters, and they are always called on first.

The Trump-favorable website is a great idea and a long time coming. The media made no bones about how they would cover then-candidate Trump, and justified it as early as August of 2016. New York Times media reporter Jim Rutenberg explained why journalists were "obligated" to cover Trump "differently," and that because the orange man was so bad, it was perfectly okay to throw all objectivity to the wind. How convenient. And they have certainly done that. A recent analysis of mainstream media coverage by the Media Research Center showed a whopping 92 percent negative coverage of Trump by ABC, CBS, and NBC. Contrast that with 2021 and incoming President Joe Biden, who received 59 percent positive coverage.

The other reason the website is a great idea, it will surely tick off the mainstream media. You can access the new site here.
