It has been a rough couple of weeks for Democrats. They have had to continue with the talking points of "there's no evidence" in both the Hunter Biden and Joe Biden investigations as actual evidence continues to pile up. Then there was the U.N. Summit, where Joe Biden mumbled and bumbled, walked into flags, and forgot to shake the hand of Brazilian President de Silva, a leftist Biden has thrown his support behind. And then there was Democrat Senator John Fetterman, who, because he has never had a real job and thus has never learned to dress for one, refuses to show any respect by continuing to show up in the Senate Chamber in gym shorts and a hoodie as if he is just showing up to chill at the frat house, and they were all forced to act like it was no big deal. So it gets even more amusing when Democrats suddenly discover things like standards, but other things like irony are still completely lost on them.

On Friday, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was indicted on several charges, including conspiracy to commit bribery. According to the indictment, among the bribes Menendez and his wife allegedly received were “cash, gold bars, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle and other items of value." a search of the couple's home by federal agents revealed cash hidden in various places, including clothing belonging to Menendez. On Wednesday, Menendez pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Fetterman was the first of Menendez's colleagues to call for his resignation. He released a statement on Saturday that read:

Senator Menendez should resign. He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence under our system, but he is not entitled to continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations. I hope he chooses an honorable exit and focuses on his trial.

Menendez's fellow New Jersey Senator, Cory Booker, has also called for Menendez to step down. But during a recent interview with MSNBC's Joy Reid, Fetterman made a curious comparison. He compared Menendez's bribery accusations to Tony Soprano. He said to Reid, “The last time there’s ever been a man with so much cash in their home in New Jersey was Tony Soprano. You know?” He also remarked that he was surprised that he was the first Democrat Senator to call for Menendez to resign. 

So, just to be clear, is Fetterman — and others who have since come out to call for Menendez's ouster — saying that there should be some level of standards in the Senate? Is he saying that there should be some basic rules of conduct, like don't take bribes, don't get caught in compromising situations with people who are not your spouse, and don't use your position for nefarious activities? Not to confuse the senator, but should there be standards for some things and not for others?

Fetterman went on to say to Joy Reid:

Senator Ted Cruz could show up dressed like Spiderman and I would a-Ok with that. I do think we have more important kinds of things to be worrying about, you know, whether it's gold bars in a mattress or whether it's the shutdown or the impeachment.

My colleague Bonchie rightly pointed out that, ultimately, these things are unrelated to one another. Also, that giving in to someone who all but throws a tantrum like a toddler when told he has to put his long pants on by his mom brings a certain level of degradation to the Senate floor. But again, why are some standards okay and others not?

Democrats' inability to connect the dots when talking about the allegations against Bob Menendez versus similar behavior alleged to have been committed by President Joe Biden is also a bit breathtaking. While gold bars may not be found in Joe Biden's closet in the White House residence quarters, evidence of Joe's involvement in Biden family influence peddling is mounting. Instances of Biden participating in phone calls, business dinners, and other meetings with his son Hunter's overseas business associates abound. What Democrats seem to be saying is: There are standards for senators but not for presidents. I can't wait to hear the explanation of why these two sets of allegations are completely different.

In the meantime, Halloween is coming. Ted Cruz should be able to get a whale of a deal on a Spiderman costume and go to work.
