The police chief and mayor of Minneapolis spoke at a press conference on Saturday afternoon after multiple reports in the morning on a shooting involving federal agents that left one man dead. As we wrote earlier:
Multiple reports have come in showing what appeared to be federal officers shooting a suspect in Minneapolis, a city already at the heart of increased tensions between immigration enforcement and local protestors.
According to Bill Melugin of Fox News, an altercation between an unknown person and Border Patrol agents resulted in one of the agents shooting the person.
In an update, we learned that the man has since died from his injuries. The Department of Homeland Security also made a statement to Fox News, which read in part:
“At 9:05 AM CT, as DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault, an individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun," DHS told Fox News. "The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming."
The statement continued:
"Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots," the statement continued. "Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect also had 2 magazines and no ID—this looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.

In the immediate wake of the shooting, MN Gov. Tim Walz (D) released a statement:
I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.
— Governor Tim Walz (@GovTimWalz) January 24, 2026
The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.
Chief Brian O'Hara urged calm during the afternoon presser after anti-ICE protesters began flooding into the area where the shooting happened, asking them to stay away "or leave if they are there."
“Please do not destroy our own city,” he said. He called the grouping an "unlawful assembly."
The AP reported on the rising chaos wrought by the "angry" mob:
An angry crowd gathered and screamed profanities at federal officers, calling them “cowards” and telling them to go home.
About a block from the shooting scene black smoke churned into the sky from where protesters had lit a fire in a metal dumpster. The intersection where the shooting has been blocked off, and Border Patrol agents are on the scene wielding batons.
O'Hara said, “Our demand today is for those federal agencies that are operating in our city to do so with the same discipline, humanity and integrity that effective law enforcement in this country demands."
“We urge everyone to remain peaceful. We recognize that there is a lot of anger and a lot of questions around what has happened," he continued, "but we need people to remain peaceful in the area.”
He also clarified that the age of the man shot is 37.
Mayor Frey spoke directly to President Donald Trump in his remarks:
I just saw a video of more than six masked agents pummeling one of our constituents, and shooting him to death. How many more residents, how many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end? How many more lives need to be lost before this administration realizes that a political and partisan narrative is not as important as American values?
"How many times must local and national leaders plead with you, Donald Trump, to end this operation and recognize that this is not creating safety in our city?" he added.
Others in the Democrat Party in Minnesota also responded to the incident, including Rep Ilhan Omar (D-05).
“I am absolutely heartbroken, horrified, and appalled that federal agents murdered another member of our community. It is beyond shameful these federal agents are targeting our residents instead of protecting them,” she said.
“This isn’t isolated or accidental. The Trump administration is trying to beat us into submission rather than protect us. ...This administration cannot continue violating constitutional rights under the guise of immigration enforcement.”
MN Sen. Tina Smith (D) said of the shooting by CBP, “We are gathering more information, but ICE must leave now so MPD can secure the scene and do their jobs.”
Rep. Angie Craig (D-02), who is running to replace Smith in the U.S. Senate, also said in a statement:
"[I have seen with] my own eyes the video of another horrific killing by ICE agents this morning in Minneapolis. This is sickening.
“The agency is beyond out of control. How much more evidence do my Republican colleagues in Minnesota need to speak out?”
Gov. Walz has released a second statement about his phone call with the White House:
I told the White House the state must lead the investigation.
— Governor Tim Walz (@GovTimWalz) January 24, 2026
Let state investigators secure justice. As we process the scene, stay peaceful and give them space.
The State has the personnel to keep people safe – federal agents must not obstruct our ability to do so.
This is a developing story. RedState will provide updates as more information becomes available.
