The subject of refugees entering the United States has been one we've steadily covered on these pages over the past few years, especially during President Joe Biden's term in the White House, when people from around the world were allowed to stream across the border with Mexico - and take flights into the nation's interior - practically unhindered by authorities.
On Thursday, the Trump administration announced that it will be making a major change to how immigration works regarding refugees who are allowed to enter the U.S., starting the end of Oct. through the end of the fiscal year (that runs through Sept. 2026).
And if you wanted to venture a wild guess that this is another announcement of an action from Team Trump that falls into the "I voted for this!" category, you would be right. The number will be dramatically cut from the Biden era, or any recent year on record.. There's a second item listed as part of the new policy that's sure to enrage liberals, too. I'll swing back to that shortly.
Anyway, the White House in a way previewed this announcement back in Feb., when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) fully scrapped the Biden parole policy that allowed more than 500,000 citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to be flown into the U.S. and permitted to apply for work cards. This is the infamous CHNV program.
Okay, here's the big change--the total number of refugees allowed to enter the country will be - get this - 7,500:
In notices posted to the Federal Register, the White House said that only 7,500 refugees will be accepted... The notices added that priority will be given under this category to Afrikaner refugees “and other victims of illegal or unjust discrimination in their respective homelands.”
The report notes a fact that RedState readers are no strangers to--the number of refugees let in during Biden's presidential term was out of control; the refugee admission tally was around 100,000 a year.
But this move by the second Trump WH is also historic; it would be the smallest number since the 1970s, when 17,000 refugees were accepted here. And as the report states, even during COVID during Trump 45, the number was a robust 11,000.
There's also going to be a change on which federal department handles refugee policy:
The administration also said it is shifting refugee resettlement contracts from the purview of the State Department to the Office of Refugee Resettlement at the Department of Health and Human Services — a major departure from the typical way the U.S. refugee program has been administered under recent administrations.
The Trump administration explained it by saying this change on resettling being handled by HHS “serves the national interest, promotes efficient use of taxpayer dollars, protects the integrity of the United States immigration system, and supports refugees in achieving early economic self-sufficiency and assimilation into American society.”
As my colleague Bonchie wrote in May, to describe the situation for white Afrikaners (natives of South Africa) as dire is something of an understatement:
But while the left was busy taking the bait and going out on a limb by claiming that granting refugee status wasn't justified, South Africa's government came right out and said the quiet part out loud.
...
Here's the key line.
What the instigators of this falsehood seek is not safety, but impunity from transformation. They flee not from persecution, but from justice, equality, and accountability for historic privilege.

One focus of the Politico report, linked above, as liberals have griped over since Team Trump started dropping hints of the policy change, is that the South African cultural group is getting priority under this policy--not the groups from (often leftist) countries the Left would prefer.
Priceless: Now It's Marco Rubio's Turn to School Margaret Brennan on South Africans and Refugees
Even without the language in the announcement and policy about South Africans fleeing for their lives, it's likely the leftists are going to keep flipping out over this. You're probably not surprised by that. There's another sure thing about this, though. The fact that the administration is following through on its promise to people in danger around the world says a lot about our party and values as Conservatives--and is America First, for sure. It's worth celebrating.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
