After years of controversy and costly reshoots, Disney's live-action "Snow White" has finally been released, and it's been greeted by a barrage of negative reviews along with embarrassing, opening weekend ticket sales.
The people running Disney picked a poisoned apple, it appears:
Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot’s “Snow White” is projected to rake in just about $45 million this weekend, putting it on track to be one of Disney’s sleepiest opening weekends yet.
As of Friday mid-day, the beleaguered live-action remake of the 1937 classic reaped $15.5 million across 4,200 North American theaters, including $3.5 million from Thursday night’s previews, Deadline reported.
Matinees and Sunday evening showings could give the movie a much-needed boost, however, but Deadline projects the film’s domestic box office numbers will fall somewhere in the mid-$40 million range — putting it in competition with the washout “Dumbo” remake from 2019.
Deadline notes that while the live-action "Dumbo" only brought in $46 million (after spending $170 million to make it) during its opening frame in theaters across North America, "Snow White" will likely be an even bigger loser. Disney spent $270 million on it. Just a month ago (Feb.), "Box Office Pro projected it would make as much as $85 million domestically." Ouch.
Reviewers, meanwhile, are panning the picture as a pale imitation of the 1937 animated feature film, with a storyline that seems to push equity under the wiggly weasel word "fairness," and by including what some are calling nightmarish CGI dwarves instead of casting live actors.
The most recent updates on the movie's travails ahead of its release on Friday gave a hint that "Snow White" could follow a familiar pattern of fail for the Mouse House, and the early presale numbers for the beleaguered live-action film have been dismal at best. Readers who have been following the story since 2023 likely recall the huge mistakes that Rachel Zegler, as the movie's most visible star who plays Snow White, made in the press by insulting both the beloved classic Disney film and the audience.
She and the movie have suffered backlash as a result.

But as my colleague Bob Hoge wrote on Friday, Disney has already shown that it has learned zero lessons, with the company's shareholders voting at their annual meeting to reject a proposal to ditch DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).

Honestly, you have to ask: Who decided in the first place to attempt to modernize and "improve" a perfect movie like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"? On this one, Disney deserves everything they get for refusing to listen to their audience.
