One of the most important ongoing cultural events has been the ongoing drama surrounding Disney's new live-action Snow White movie, starring Gal Gadot and one of the biggest thorns in Disney's side ever, Rachel Zegler.
To be clear, the movie was already destined to fail. Snow White's character was race swapped for a Latina actress, and instead of a kind and nurturing figure, we're going to get another powerful girl-boss figure, a tired trope created during Disney's woke era that was entirely unwelcome the moment it arrived and continued to drive away viewers with every subsequent creation.
But this Snow White movie may end up changing Disney, and for the better.
At the core of this movie's issues is Zegler, a woman who displayed an incredible amount of woke hubris during the promotion of the film. She went so far as to insult the original 1937 Disney classic, which helped put Disney on the map as a major picture studio.
Zegler, and even Gadot, suggested the original Snow White was problematic in various ways, and told everyone who asked that they fixed the story of Snow White by making her into something she wasn't, yet another modern example of a strong female archetype.
Zegler's disparaging of the source material, as well as her lashing out at over half the country for voting for Trump, did so much damage that Disney couldn't keep up. Audiences made it clear they were skipping this one and doing so very loudly. The disdain the Western world now seems to have for Zegler has caused Disney to cease promoting the film in its usual capacity, going so far as to cancel its London premiere, and making its LA premiere a much quieter and controlled event than usual.
Things aren't looking good for this film, despite all the attempts at repairing the damage. While critics are calling this movie superb and that Zegler "stuns," no one is buying that, believing that these critics are likely being dishonest and probably incentivized by Disney to give it good reviews.
If they were hoping the critics would give it at least a little bump, it's not working. Two different accounts checked their local theaters to see if tickets were being bought for the movie, and none are. Checking my own local theater, the prime-time evening showing on Saturday shows no tickets sold. All seats available.
My local theater’s Saturday evening showing of Snow White has sold NO seats.

This movie is going to bomb so hard. I’m think $150 to $200 million loss. pic.twitter.com/RrKIPwZHVz
This isn't going to be overlooked by Disney, and how could it? This is one of the largest rebukes of a corporation ever seen, on par with the Bud Light boycott. Disney is likely going to make some massive changes after this, and I don't just mean in the way it writes and films it movies and television shows.
I mean they're really going to start locking down on their employees.
Disney's response to this bomb is probably going to include tighter contracts after this. Zegler taught them that modern Hollywood celebrities are likely a liability when given free-rein to just say whatever they want in front of cameras. What's likely going to happen is that Disney will begin making airtight morality clauses in their contracts.
This means buckling down on how cast and crew can act in public during filming, promotion, and release, including:
- Restrictions on political statements
- Guidelines for public behavior
- Prohibitions on criticizing the studio on its projects, both past and present
- Social media restrictions, including approval processes for posts
- Requirements to follow Disney's PR messaging during interviews
It's likely that cast and crew will receive way more PR and media training, and heavily vet employees before they're signed on to projects. The ultimate goal here is to take out the "activist" in the actor or actress, and replace them with a PR machine that will actually appeal to audiences in order to convince them to see the film.
After this, I imagine Disney is going to get highly aggressive with its contractual language, and that's probably a good thing. Zegler is a perfect example of how one person can wreck an entire production and throw $320 million (not including promotional costs) into the fire.
As I've written before, Disney is clearly terrified of you not liking it anymore, and it should be. It's abused its audience's trust and even insulted them when they weren't showing up in the way cast and crew wanted them to. At one point, before Obi-Wan Kenobi was released on Disney+, Disney preemptively accused audiences of being racist, an accusation they provided no real proof for.
This, along with many other events including Disney's fight with Florida Republicans over the "Parental Rights In Education Bill" created an audience-driven revolt against Disney that caused its stocks to tank, and park attendance to falter. After South Park's hit on Disney, making Disney's wokeness apolitical, Disney began spending millions of dollars to change already completed films to make them less message-driven, even up to Captain America: Brave New World.
But this also included Snow White, a film Disney has spent millions to change in so many ways, even going so far as to push it back a year, not just to make fixes, but to try to find a way to do PR damage control for what Zegler did to the film.

If Snow White teaches Disney this lesson, then it won't be a complete loss for the company. It'll finally get the message we've been trying to send it all along.
Stop shoving politics down our throat, stop getting mad when we spit it out, and just make good products.
