It seems it’s been one thing after another in 2020, right? As Red State‘s Nick Arama reminded us Friday, it’s “proven to be one of the most ‘What the Heck Is Going On’ years” in our lifetimes.

But if the Wuhan coronavirus, hordes of carnivorous rodents (of Unusual Size) and murder hornets,  or the comets whizzing past don’t take down Planet Earth, maybe this will…

Scientists shared this week that the West Nile Virus is back for the 2020 season, with both Michigan and California reporting the capture of mosquitoes infected with the disease.

According to WILX:

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reporting the first case of West Nile virus in 2020.

The MDHHS said the virus was reported in a captive hawk from Lapeer County.

On an even scarier note, they gave a heads-up about another mosquito-borne illness, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE):

In terms of EEE, the MDHHS said the state of Michigan experiences the worst outbreak ever recorded in 2019, with EEE activity reported in 20 Michigan counties with 50 cases in animals and 10 people infected including six deaths.

WILX also shared a list of helpful ways the MDHHS gave to stay safe from West Nile Virus — and they apply wherever you happen to live:

Eliminating all sources of standing water that can support mosquito breeding around your home, including water in birdbaths, abandoned swimming pools, wading pools, old tires and any other object holding water once a week.

Making sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings.

They also suggested liberal application of EPA-registered insect repellents with one of the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol or 2-undecanone.

San Diego health authorities have found the virus there, too, Fox5 San Diego reported:

A mosquito caught in routine trapping in the Black Mountain Ranch area has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first appearance of the virus in San Diego County in 2020.

They had a better time of things than the folks in Michigan last year, though. Though three residents reportedly came down with West Nile Virus, all of them recovered — and none of them were infected in San Diego county.

That said, the virus is nothing to take lightly: it’s the number one mosquito-borne disease in the U.S., with malaria as its runner-up.

But, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website showed, out of the nearly 960 cases in 2019, just 58 Americans died from it.

Okay, maybe it’s not one of the plagues signalling the pending Apocalypse after all.

Those ROUSes may make a comeback in 2021, you never know
