National School Choice Week kicks off today, and polls show that the public continues to support educational freedom for families. The American Federation for Children’s third annual school choice poll found that more than two thirds of Americans support this right of a family to choose the best school for their family.
“In the aftermath of the decisive 2016 elections, school choice remains a bipartisan issue with strong support among key demographics across the country,” said Kevin P. Chavous, board member of the American Federation for Children. “The results of this poll demonstrate that the public is ready to change the education status quo and allow children and families to customize their education to meet their unique learning needs.”
Trump’s plan to provide $20 billion in school choice funding received 51 percent support (35 percent opposed) and a a proposal to create a scholarship tax credit was immensely popular, with 72 percent supporting. School choice is a bipartisan issue, the study found, with a majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all indicating support. There is also a great deal of diversity among supporters, with majorities of latino, african american, and milennial respondents also in support.
School choice supporters around the country are celebrating National School Choice Week, which kicks off today with events across the country. With more than 21,000 events being held in all fifty states and the District of Columbia, an estimated 6.4 million people are expected to take part.
