Omar Announces: For the SOTU, She's Protesting the 'Illegitimate' President Who Hates Immigrants - But in a Different Way Than Her Fellow Squad Resisters

Ilhan Omar’s breaking ranks with two of the Fab Four, aka the Squad.

She announced Tuesday that — unlike Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley — she’ll be attending the evening’s State of the Union address.

But don’t misunderstand — she’s going out of protest.

Here’s what she had to say about Trump — who’s married to an immigrant, and was previously as well — on Twitter:

“It’s no secret that this president has routinely targeted religious and ethnic minorities. He has fanned the flames of hate against refugees, Muslims, Africans, immigrants, women and all racial and religious minorities.”

She also appeared to assert he’s kind of an aspiring (corrupt) dictator:

“He is routinely and openly hostile to any legitimate congressional oversight. He has made clear his wanton corruption by soliciting a bribe from a foreign government for his personal political gain.”

And ya know that whole impeachment thing where (virtually) all the Democrats did (and will) vote against him? She believes it’s a travesty that all the Republicans did (and will) vote for him:

“His partisans in the Senate are placing their personal interests ahead of the country by blocking a fair trial on his conduct. This impeached president is not legitimate.”

But here’s why she’s going:

“I am attending tonight’s address not to confer any legitimacy on his actions, his statements, or his presidency. I am attending on behalf of all of those targeted by this president to say, ‘We are greater than hate.’ My presence tonight is resistance.”

Some on Twitter had a negative response:

She, of course, also has loyal supporters.

And she’s not alone in her protest, be it by presence or absence. Courtesy of The Hill, here’s a list of Dems who won’t be showing themselves at the address:

  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)
  • Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA)
  • Rep. Al Green (D-TX)
  • Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN)
  • Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR)
  • Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA)
  • Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL)
  • Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA)

Squad member Rashida Tlaib’s set to attend, but I’m not sure whether it will also be to #Resist.

If I may say so, this is not how our representation in Washington is supposed to work. All in Congress — be it Republicans or Democrats — are elected and paid by taxpayers to participate in the workings of our government. Not to protest the existence of others who were elected and are also paid.

Anything less is the definition of division, and — to my way of thinking — an epic failure.

And that — as of February 4th, 2020 — is sadly part of the state of our union.
