WSJ'S Kimberly Strassel: Impeachment will Only Shock Voters with the Democrats' Double Standard

On Friday, Wall Street Journal writer Kimberley Strassel made a pointed observation about the Democrats’ increasing impeachment chant: The public is seeing an overwhelming double standard.

On Fox & Friends, she laid it out:

“They don’t understand how Democrats can say this is an impeachable offense when Democrats seem to have no problem with Hillary Clinton’s campaign directing Russian disinformation to the FBI against the Trump campaign.”

Furthermore, she said, Dems choosing — of all things — Trump’s phone call as basis for the major move is “mystifying.”

She makes a good point — why this, and why now? Could it be they’re becoming ever-certain they can’t win 2020? If that isn’t it, they need a new game plan. And if that’s it, they need a new game plan.

As for it being “mystifying,” Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel bolstered the claim in a piece for The Daily Caller:

The key question with Trump’s Ukraine call, though, is whether the president’s actions, advisable or not, rise to the level of an impeachable offense. It’s hard to argue they do. The president did not, as was first reported, offer a quid pro quo to the Ukrainians. He did not condition any U.S. support on a Biden investigation. The Justice Department has already looked at the totality of the call and determined that Trump did not break the law.

Back to that double standard thing, it is a good question: How does Trump speaking to a foreign government about looking into an opponent compare to Hillary Clinton funding the Steele dossier, which was the foundation of Russian collusion mania?

Many paying attention are surely unimpressed. And they’ll be more so, as the process continues.

Trump has defended his phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “perfect,” and — as I covered here — he’s called this latest torch against him a “witch hunt.”

As reported by Fox, he’s also lambasted the maneuver in the House as a “Democrat scam.”

Whatever it may be called, it’s set to hurt the party for a number of reasons (here and here).

In a Friday column for WSJ, Kimberley gave credit for the ongoing Democratic foot-shot where she believes it’s squarely due:

If the latest impeachment push continues to backfire, Democrats can thank their duplicitous House Intelligence chairman, Adam Schiff.
