Spain is, to put it bluntly, hosed. And it's the fault of years of increasingly feckless, overly permissive, and honestly, chicken-brained immigration policy.
In the closing days of July we witnessed with horror the invasion of the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern African coast, near the Strait of Gibraltar. Thousands of Moroccans, many rumored to have been released from prisons and driven to the coast, invaded these small enclaves. These weren't families looking for a better life. They were, almost universally, young, unattached, healthy military-aged males. This wasn't a mass immigration; it was an invasion, pure and simple. At least 67 people are dead, as of this writing. The invaders crashed into Spanish homes, and assaulted the Spanish residents of the enclaves.
Here's how things came to this point in Spain. A look at Spanish immigration policy over just the last few years is revealing.
In 2022, under Royal Decree 629/2022 (yes, Spain still has those) it became much easier for immigrants to enter the labor markets, by issuing more temporary work and residence permits, presumably to bring in more Third World immigrants to do the work that Spaniards didn't want to do. This incentivized more Third World immigration, legal and illegal. We might note that this 2022 decree was only the most recent of several such steps, which combined granted legal status to well over a million illegal immigrants.
This is the kind of thing American Democrats are talking about when they mention amnesty for illegal aliens here.
Then, in 2024, another decree, Royal Decree 1155/2024, extended paths to residency, extended the time allowed on work permits, set up a family reunification process, and changed rules for immigrants on visas to make it so that, in many cases, they did not have to return home to seek a renewal of their visas.
This is the kind of thing American Democrats are talking about when they cry for a "path to citizenship" and family reunification for the families of aliens legal and illegal here.
Then, the capper: Earlier this year, the Spanish government did what it called an "extraordinary regularization," which granted legal residency, by fiat, to as many as a million people in Spain legally and illegally. Here's what the Spanish government claimed to be doing:
The Council of Ministers has authorised the urgent processing of a royal decree to carry out an extraordinary regularisation process for foreign nationals already in Spain. The aim is to offer this group the opportunity "to live with equal rights," as well as to respond to "a reality that exists on our streets and has an impact on coexistence, well-being, and the economy", explained the Minister for Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration and Government Spokesperson, Elma Saiz.
This is the kind of thing that American Democrats are talking about when they cry out for "comprehensive immigration reform."
In early 2026, the immigrant population of Spain exceeded 10 million. Most of the immigration was from North Africa, with some coming from Latin America. All the incentives were in place: Spain's doors were wide open.

Then, the whole thing, inevitably, crashed. Right around 60,000 invaders crashed into the coastal Spanish enclave of Ceuta. An estimated 67 were dead. The Spanish Army responded, and most of the invaders were pushed back into Morocco, but the precedent is set; there will be more invasions, and each wave will be better-prepared.
The Spanish government is deploying extra troops and police officers to its north African enclave of Ceuta after thousands of people swam and waded into the tiny territory from neighbouring Morocco in a matter of hours.
Videos shot at Tarajal beach on Thursday showed crowds of people walking around the breakwaters and running on the beach and roads.
Donald Trump has also criticised the “catastrophe”, telling a cabinet meeting: “I saw Spain yesterday, and I watched the catastrophe that took place. It looks like an invasion of a country.
“Hundreds of thousands of people. And that same thing’s going to happen to us if the Republicans don’t get elected, except worse, much bigger, much easier to get into.”
He's correct, and the United States has a much, much longer land border on the south than Spain has in total - and that's not including the northern border or the many, many miles of coastline, on Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of America shores.
This is what Democrats are talking about when they moan about how immigration, legal or illegal, makes us all safer and more prosperous. This is what Democrats are talking about when they cry out for "diversity."
And make no mistake about it: This is what the very immigration policies pushed by the American left, most especially the "democratic socialist" (commie) abolish-the-borders crowd would have happen here. Remember the "migrant" caravans of the Biden years?
Look at Spain, people. Look at Europe. If the left, especially this new and disturbing communist fringe ever gets control, that's what will happen here, and that's for sure and for certain.
