Inside the DSA: Over Half of Leaders Now Identify As Communists

I've written before about my father, a child of the Depression and a World War II veteran, and how he described himself as a "Truman Democrat." Well, I do know that Dad was registered to vote as an independent, and I also know that he voted for Ronald Reagan twice. But Dad was always looking for the next Harry Truman. He wouldn't recognize today's Democratic Party.

In recent months, we have all watched with some consternation as the Democratic Party, once the home of Dad's favorite president, Harry Truman, seems to be falling into the hands of self-proclaimed "democratic socialists." Now, that very term is a misnomer; "democrat" and "socialist" are terms that are fundamentally opposed to one another. There can be no democracy in socialism, which is an inherently totalitarian system.

So, I've been calling them what they are: Communists. And now, it seems, the members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are increasingly calling themselves that, as well.

At the Faith & Freedom Coalition gathering in Washington last week, President Trump warned that many Democratic Socialist candidates “are not social democrats. These are hardcore, godless Communists. . . . This is the most serious threat to our Country since its existence.” Trump’s remarks sparked a wave of condemnations, including from CNN chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins, who said that “socialism, much less democratic socialism, is not communism.”

Statements like Collins’s highlight how little attention the press has given to the Democratic Socialists of America and its national leadership. The majority of the DSA’s governing board, the National Political Committee (NPC), openly identifies with Communist ideology.

That's not a surprise; regular readers will note that I've been calling them commies all along. What's more, the legacy media has largely ignored this, not to mention the terrifying implications of it. Now, though, it looks like the mask is coming off.

Every two years, DSA convenes its national convention, where delegates pass resolutions and elect members to its board of directors, the NPC. From 2021 to 2023, the Socialist Majority Caucus and the Green New Deal slate held a majority on the NPC, drawing criticism for failing to hold elected officials accountable and for prioritizing coalition building that positioned the DSA as a political partner rather than an independent force. By 2023, however, a “coalition of Communist caucuses” had secured a majority on the NPC.

Vincent Lima, the political committee chair of the Socialist Majority Caucus, described the NPC at the time as divided between two tendencies, “mass politics” and “sectarian.” Those seeing mass politics as the path forward favor labor organizing, electoral participation, and incremental reforms to build a socialist future; they view the DSA as an organization for millions of Americans. The sectarians, by contrast, emphasize ideological purity and see the DSA as something closer to a vanguard prepared for “the final crisis of capitalism to sweep a socialist party into power.”

And if that "final crisis of capitalism" doesn't arise, they'll make one. Count on it. We've already seen how the Democratic Party is being co-opted by mostly young, mostly inexperienced youths calling themselves "democratic socialists." They seem to be good at one thing: Picking fights they think they can win, in deep-blue cities, in overwhelmingly safe Democratic congressional districts. They are a growing influence, and we should make no mistake about that.

And, yes, they are communists. Let's not beat around the bush on this any longer.

There's a fundamental problem here: Too many people don’t seem to know what socialism is. They look at things like Social Security and think, “Oh, that’s funded by tax money, so it’s socialism.” No, it’s not. For one thing, Social Security is something that Americans pay into for years, expecting eventually to get something back out of it. What they get sucks; they would do much, much better putting the same amount in a 401(k) and investing it in a few decent mutual funds. Even treasury bonds would be a better bet.

But this isn’t what the commies want. That’s not what they mean. One thing they seem to get better than a lot of Americans is precisely what socialism and communism actually are: The seizure, by government, of the means of production, of private property, including any industries. That’s what they mean by “seizing the means of production.” Right now, in today's political world, they are defining themselves as "democratic socialists," but we should not be misled by that.

No, we have to see these people for what they are: Communists. They adhere to an ideology that has resulted in the deaths of untold millions, in the Soviet Union, in China, in North Korea, in Cuba, everywhere communism has been attempted. And I can tell you precisely what they will say to that: "That wasn't real communism." They will assert that to the end, along with their claim that they will get it right this time, just as Charlie Brown is determined that this time he will kick that football. They will proclaim, loudly, that they know how to do it right, and the key to implementing real communism, other than surrendering all of our fundamental rights and freedoms, is to make sure the right people are in charge - it's all a matter of picking the right Top Men, you see.

Elections are coming. Very possibly the most consequential two election cycles since the Depression, maybe since 1860. Know your foes. Know their goals. Vote accordingly.
