The fallout over the federal indictment of the Southern Policy Law Center is still coming in. This is a far-left group that tossed around accusations of racism as though they were confetti, who claimed that a white supremacist was hiding in every bedroom closet; now it turns out they were funding some of the groups they claimed to oppose, presumably to keep the grift going. Now, one analyst is pointing out that there will likely be more fallout beyond the indictment.
The Department of Justice’s indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center will “increase public scrutiny” of the tax-exempt organization, which has nearly $800 million in assets, a research analyst says.
Senior research analyst at American think tank Capital Research Center Robert Stilson told The Center Square that “at a minimum,” the Southern Poverty Law Center’s indictment will “further increase public scrutiny of a group whose operations were already deeply controversial.”
“Americans might rightly question whether what the SPLC does is aligned with their own understanding of what charities should be doing with their tax-exempt dollars – and this was true before any of the alleged actions in the indictment came to light,” Stilson said.
It was true before the indictment, but the SPLC raked in many millions in donations regardless. There are plenty of donors out there who will fund any far-left group that pushes the right buttons, and it seems "racism" is one of those buttons — and it allowed the SPLC to take in a veritable fortune.
Stilson added: “For context, it is important to recall just how incredibly wealthy the SPLC is.”
“Its most recent financials disclosed net assets of over $786 million, with annual revenues that exceed some of the best-known charities in the country,” Stilson said.
“Despite this, it continues to strenuously solicit money from small-dollar donors on its website,” Stilson said. “Those ordinary donors in particular are the ones who should be taking a hard look at the true nature of the group they are supporting.”
That may happen now.

Jeffries Reveals Dems' Disturbing Plans During His Troubling Remarks About SPLC Indictment
Allegations are one thing. But it's a little harder to hand-wave away a federal indictment, and all the evidence that is bound to come to light as things proceed. Oh, the SPLC will have some donors who will stick by them through thick and thin, including perhaps the House or Representatives' Minority Leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), who is frankly embarrassing himself with his response to all this; or at least, he would be, were he capable of embarrassment.
Still, it's a safe bet that donations will drop, perhaps precipitously, as the fallout continues to pile on.
SPLC’s problem is that in 21st century America, there is not enough racism and far-right extremism to keep donors sufficiently panicked to continue writing checks to finance the organization's fat executive salaries, a palatial six-story quarters in Montgomery, Alabama and a nine-figure investment portfolio (some of which is held in offshore accounts.)
All of this is about to be splashed all over the front page of every newspaper, on the home page of every news website, on the splash screen of every blog and podcast in the nation now. And that cannot help but have some effect on donations. And, honestly, it couldn't happen to a more deserving group of grifters and race-baiters.
