Hoo Boy: Former Biden FTC Chair, Mamdani Advisor, Now Preaching Economics at Columbia

It's almost incestuous, the way the left shuttles people around from gig to gig. Oh, politicians on the right tend to bring the same people around as well, but it sure looks like those decisions are made more based on trust, proven ability, and merit; just look at the majority of President Trump's cabinet, for example.

Then, for the other side, look at the unlamented Joe Biden cabinet, staff, and advisors, where it was incompetence all the way down. This included a person who was possibly the worst Federal Trade Commissioner (FTC) chair ever. This person, Lina Khan, went on to advise New York mayoral candidate (now mayor) Zohran Mamdani on economic policy and "affordability," both matters in which the commie Mamdani is utterly failing.

That matters not a jot, thought, to Columbia University, which has gifted Lina Khan with the cushy job of launching an "Economic Policy Center." Talk about the blind leading the blind.

Lina Khan, the antitrust enforcer who challenged tech giants, wants to shape another generation of legal scholars to join her crusade.

Columbia University, where the 37-year-old has taught on and off since 2020, is launching the Center for Law and the Economy, which will be jointly run by Khan and Lev Menand, a law professor at Columbia.

The center aims to offer Khan’s brand of antitrust enforcement and economic policy to law students and progressive policymakers nationwide. It will also focus on areas such as banking law, consumer protection and economic governance, Khan said.

“It’s just been clear that there is a huge hunger among students, and law students in particular, to be part of this work and to help advance it,” Khan said in an interview.

She challenged tech giants, all right - challenged them and lost, including high-profile cases against Microsoft and Meta. Perhaps frustrated by the losses, Khan went on to join Team Mamdani, because why shouldn't economic illiteracy be shared all around?

The FTC suffered court defeats against Microsoft and Meta Platforms; Khan left in 2025. In November, Khan became co-chair of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s transition team, advising the democratic socialist mayor. She helped vet the top legal jobs for the city, and advised the mayor on his affordability platform as well as on areas like consumer protection and utility costs. She continues to advise and support his agenda on affordability and the economy.

Columbia, what were you thinking?

We might note that it was not the Biden administration that made a big dent into one major consumer price issue, that being healthcare; no, it was the Trump administration that first made some headway on that front.

The Trump administration is cracking down on hospital contracting practices that it alleges are anticompetitive and drive up health care costs.

Why it matters: Hospitals have been the leading contributor to health spending growth in recent years, but policymakers are usually reluctant to go after institutions that are deeply entrenched in their communities — and politically popular.

Driving the news: The Justice Department sued the New York-Presbyterian hospital system last week, saying the nonprofit wrote contracts that forced insurers to put its facilities in their most favored tier and blocked them from offering incentives to patients who seek out lower-priced rivals.

So, to the left-wing-dominated Columbia University, we can only say this: You have good luck with that. Staffing economic policy by economic illiterates. I'm sure the successes of the students exposed to that bilge will be phenomenal.
