In a turn of events that can only be described as disconcerting, the United States Embassy in Iraq is warning Americans in that country to leave "immediately," after random attacks by what have been reported to be Iran-affiliated militias. The attacks include at least one missile that struck a helipad on the United States Embassy in Baghdad's "Green Zone." As of this writing, no Americans have been reported to be killed or injured by these seemingly random attacks.
If these attacks are being carried out by Iran-backed militias, as is apparently suspected, then it's a significant escalation.
The US Embassy in Baghdad has warned Americans inside to leave Iraq “immediately.”
A security alert posted by the embassy cites “indiscriminate attacks” carried out and threatened by Iran-aligned terror militias – including a missile attack that hit a helipad at the US embassy Saturday inside the fortified “Green Zone.”
“Iran-aligned terrorist militias have attacked the International Zone in central Baghdad on multiple occasions,” the embassy wrote in a statement posted on X. “Repeated attacks have also occurred in the vicinity of Erbil International Airport and the Consulate General. Do not attempt to come to the Embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil due to the ongoing risk of rockets, drones, and mortars in Iraqi airspace.”
Here's the problem: There are no flights. If any Americans wish to get the H out of Dodge right now, they aren't going by air.

The real question here is why there are any Americans in Iraq at all, other than essential embassy staff - and even for them, it seems like the perfect time to get out has already gone by.

And the State Department's warning is pretty stark:
There is an ongoing State Department “do not travel” warning for the country, which borders Iran.
It says terror militias pose a “major threat to public safety” in the country, where the US has maintained bases since the Iraq War that began in 2003.
US citizens should “leave immediately,” although commercial flights don’t currently exist. The embassy advises land routes through Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
Land routes? That seems a recipe for disaster, with the likelihood of possible Iran-backed militias in the region, not to mention the possibility of just outright bandits. It seems, in fact, like the right time to get the heck out of Iraq was about three weeks ago.
This is pure speculation, but it would seem possible that the Air Force should be able to whistle up a few C-17s to get Americans out of Baghdad. It wouldn't be a comfortable ride, and the passengers might be strictly limited as to what they can bring on board, maybe even limited to the clothes they are standing in. But that's better than falling into the hands of an Iranian-sponsored terror gang.
